err... I think this is where the error message "this shouldn't happen" gets displayed :)
I can target the bat, but not surprisingly, can't hit it.

If you notice, the targeting circle is over an open tile. The bat is on an open tile, just it's drawn in midair, over the blocked tile. Move down a tile to hit it, I think having the blocked tile there is stopping the server from accepting your attack.
