When you just started the best way of making money is probably collecting herbs and selling them to high level characters.

Herb collecting is not level-dependent because most (all?) maps with herbs have no aggressive monsters. But the market price for herbs is peanuts for a veteran but a fortune for a newbie.

For me, I have found that trading (buying and reselling items) is the best way to make money. And more fun than bat grinding.

I would have to disagree on herb collecting being the best way to make money, for several reasons.

a) Herbs are spaced far apart on maps and much time is spent just looking for the herbs. You have to travel from map to map looking, etc.

b) After you have your herbs, the price on herbs fluctuate. While some characters may pay up to 200gp each for herbs, others will only buy at 100. And you have to waste time trying to find someone to buy your herbs. The NPCs will quickly give you money, you don't have to wait for a buyer or haggle.

c) Herbs offer shitty XP. While anyone can hunt herbs (even level one characters), level one characters shouldn't be concentrating on trying to get 10k gold, they should be trying to move up in level first. Their time is better spent leveling up a little first before getting to the 'lets make money' part of the game, because they can make more money after advancing a few levels first. Bats offer way more XP then herbs.

d) Bats drop daggers (500gp), as well as both teeth and wings and maggot slimes. Bats actually drop a shitload of things. Some people will often buy maggot slimes and bug legs (for lifestone creation), so bat drops are more profitable.

I think it depends on how you are skilled.
When I was playing the archer i was doing mountain snakes and red slimes for the drops and made good money with it.
Now as a mage with low dex I do bats. It needs a bit longer but I get bat teeth and wings for money AND bug legs and slimes for magic

It depends on how "long" you can actually hunt... while doing bats you have to hunt longer... whereas for slime you need lesser time (If you're lucky and getting nice drops). I'd recommend bats cause they have high drop rates. Almost every bat drops a wing or tooth... sometimes a dagger or two... sometimes some teeth!!

I can do about 100k an hour hunting bats if I do not break and I do not have to compete much.

I can make 100k an hour with herbs. They're my favourite method, and I use the Shearing Spell which probably speeds it up a bit, but I'm not certain because after Shearing a herb it takes a while before you can attack it properly (is that a bug or a glitch?). Anyway I think I calculated 10 hours per million gp, so yes... 100k an hour. I don't normally have a problem with finding a buyer. Usually a veteran or very rich n00b will buy them all. Superman used to buy them regularly, but he doesn't play any more, I don't think?

~and it costs me probably 10gp per bat, because I have 1 str and have to use Flare Dart...*

Bats are the easiest way to make money.They got expensive drops and the rate of the drops is high.
