Own IRC server?

A place for players to do role playing, discuss their guilds, etc.

Good idea?

Own IRC server?

Post by Platyna »

I may setup an IRC server on Platinum, as many people on #themanaworld on freenode suggested and are willing to connect.
Maybe we could have some webchat connecting to it?
Which kind of ircd you would fit more suitable TMW needs? Current TMW management would get approriate oper permissions.
Elven, can you do irc.themanaworld.org domain poiting to IP 81.161.192.4?

Regards.

Why shouldn't we stay on freenode? Just because you have a personal vendetta with a freenode admin?
  • former Manasource Programmer
  • former TMW Pixel artist
  • NOT a game master

Please do not send me any inquiries regarding player accounts on TMW.

You might have heard a certain rumor about me. This rumor is completely false. You might also have heard the other rumor about me. This rumor is 100% accurate.

I was on freenode only because of #themanaworld, the lag, flooding clones and ddoses doesn't make that network a friendly environment, the admins who likes to bofh around by breaking their own rules are the side effect. ;-)

I've yet to see the IRC network which does significantly better.

Even that said, QNet seems to have the most experience with dealing with idiots. Their solutions seem rather refined, but they are not fool-proof either.

In fact most of networks, even IRCNet handled the problems Freenode seems to be unable to handle.

the problem I see that in case of the next bigger ddos against platinum we wouldn't even have a irc channel in which we could discuss the attack.(Single Point of Failure)

1. Isn't Freenode constantly ddosed? They made a lot enemies, especially from those like me (sysadmins and programmers).
2. Not to mention we can link another server, e.g. located on Bjorn's host.
3. We got a new uplink with a lot better security.

I hope you don't ddos Freenode :D also I can't rember Freenod being down due to a ddos.

sounds good, but service bots would still be from one server or?

sounds even better

Something which would be nice to integrate if we should move to a own irc server would be a shared db between tmwweb/tmwserv(manaweb/manaserv) and the irc network.

No idea about services. But in case of something went wrong we can live a few hours without them.

I like the fact that IRC is separate from TMW because it makes it rare that they are "ddos"ed at the same time.

Well this seems to be an ongoing problem. By this definition, TMW (the game) would have a similar label.

Thank you for explaining why so many others have taken to task their own servers.
