A lot of us use Gimp. It's a free open source graphic editing program with capabilities similar to adobe photoshop.
http://www.gimp.org

Another free alternative is PaintNET
http://www.getpaint.net

But you can use any software you like as long as it supports 32bit PNG graphics with alpha transparency.

Sorry, But I don't understand what exactly you want.

Use gimp there are allot of online tutorials. (i use Microsoft paint) but it also leads me to editing allot of my work <than i transfer to gimp to add transparency>.

I guess if you use windows then paint.NET is easier cause the different windows that are used in GIMP aren't that good to manage in windows IMO (at least I was too stupid to handle that some years ago). If you use Linux than GIMP is really fine. I use it too.

Why so complicated?

You have a 1px pencil tool in GIMP and you also have support for layers and alpha transparency in GIMP.

The only things on top of that you might like to have are live animation preview and live tilability preview.

im slowly working my way toward gimp.
also here is a sheet in steps to one of my pixel gfx i think this is what you asked for. Also im sure one of these devs could point you at a tutorial and tmw shade and light directions. Also the way you see the item must me 45 degrees.

The 1 px pencil is the most important tool of course but modern graphic programs also have a lot of useful functions like "select by color", "color correction" and lots of more. If you know your programm well you can save a lot of time.

I have seen Gimp plugins being mentioned for just these things, though I have never had a use for them myself. A quick search gives me these; more searching will probably yield more if not better finds:

yes you may use a reference picture but don't use other games. We do have people that look for these things.

what is the first thing u pixel? try to outline it first but as long as it looks good this should not be an issue

the size for a standard item is 32x32 pxl's go by the powers of 4 basicly lol

also webchat.freenode.net channel #tmw-art
allot of ppl can help you here or just use an irc client and connect to server.freenode.net

theres no real easy way to make animations but find a program called unfreez :note the spelling unfreeze is a seprate program:
this requires you to make the sheets in separate files but its good for beginner use. and u need them to be in gif images for animation.

but the mana world client requires you to have the pixle art saved as a .png format.

Edit: that irc server is no longer used please use /server irc.themanaworld.org

This was one of the first things I pixeled, and was proud of it. (now I hate that piece, and I hate it even more that I was proud of it.)

after 3 years I updated it:
