how can I change the language of my client? I refuse to play if it stays German (now what decision was that made upon?)

It is not possible to configure the language in the client, it always uses the language that is configured in Windows. But you can delete the German translation, then the client uses English. Where the translations are stored depends on your installation, but they should be easy to find. You can select the language when you install the client.
We should be able to produce a runtime language change config option on the long run too.
