hmm, imagine each layer as its own canvas within the same imagefile. you can use blending for the layers, lock them, change their order(also good for animated gifs), name, hide etc. them. in gimp, after pasting something, you have to click -> layer -> add new layer because: otherwise the pasted content won't be a real layer. the visible layer borders could be disturbing, but are set to visible by default under the "view" menu item.

playing with some animations I might bring this monster idea back to life.

Not intended to be spherically shaded.

I liked the first perspective better. although shifting views with 3 different axis rotations would be super cool.
I liked the rock palette. I'd add a couple more shades.
I like the concept...the animations are controlled in the xml file.
I would like to see all four of the earth, air, fire and water elements done in a similar style.
It could be tied to quests later.
