[REQ] New Lava tiles

Hello everyone,

The current lava tiles are useless:

I tried to make better ones and failed:

Ideally we would have a completely re-done tileset for caves, but without a staff of paid artists this may be an unrealistic desire at this point. Thus, it would be great if someone could build a usable set of lava tiles (similar to the water tiles in layout), plus perhaps a variant of the wall with a hole in it for a `lavafall'.

Thanks in advance!

Here are some old concepts that we had lying around

The cave tileset that you're starting with was one of the alphas from my cave changes (yes, the alpha is the one that's currently in the game :( ).
I'll need to chase for the finished one to go in the game, it's at http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5001

Here are some lava tiles I made:

(For those who already saw them yesterday on IRC: I improved the color and the coast a bit)

This is really a complaint about the water tiles those new tiles are based on rather than the new tiles themselves, but the fuzzy edge of the surrounding ground has way too much anti-aliasing compared to the other TMW art.

The only thing we need now is ANIMATED TILES SUPPORT :)

Maybe I'm mentally ill, but I can not imagine popper water and lava without animation. It looks plain.

Hello Crush,
I think that your tiles need some anti-grid arrangement because repetition of pattern is too obvious.
I know that it is pretty hard to make seamless tiles - I tried myself unsuccessfully... (making tiles for my own project, not for TMW)

Maybe something like this?
But better tileable

I think, that Crush's proposition is the best for now. I think, that lava can spit with fire balls by time to time. It can also make fire near cave walls. I will try to make my first project to tmw and try to animate this lava, make "fireball" and fire. I wish you'll try to do it also :)
Modanung's lava would be fine without this pink-orange thing, as a congealed lava.

Edit: My try failed :<, lava is too hard for me, I don't have any idea how to do it.

Modanung's resembles a floor of cooling lava slowly turning into rock. I think that if the orange lines were removed from Modanung's, then these two sets would greatly complement each other. Ex. Making Modanung's tiles the ground around the lava, as normal rock would be very hot after containing lava for a long period of time.

The cave surrounding the lava would be black due to being of a basaltic composition. The caves are brown insinuating that it is below dirt, not rock.

keep in mind that the newest forming rock in that lava is still red hot.

Are you going to redesign the whole cave tileset? Because Iwon't. Also note that realistic geology is usually not expected by consumers of fantasy-themed media.

Can't we use the particle engine for lava and water? Moving highlights on a static lava and water background?

Animated tile support is being worked on. The particle engine might be overkill for this, though it could be used for accents, like the steam bubbles in the snow land.
