Characters' tones of skin

Hi everyone,

A simple thought:

Now we've got dyable sprites, a good thing would then be to implement skin tones.

This would permit to represent more the term 'World' in Mana World, and permit people to get the tone of skin they normally should have now with the months passed in this desert...

Any comments will be appreciated...

Regards,

It's been proposed before.

If we do do this, we should put the colors in an xml file that is part of the client data.

Well, I don't think presetted tones is a good thing : I think white + a float percentage value of Brown and you've got a lot of possibilities given to players.

That would be definitely better.

What do you think ?

The Aethyra guys tried to color the skintone of the player characters dynamically and the result looks more like a zombie. I think the main problem is that Modanung used a very diverse color palette for the skin. Projecting it onto a dyeable gradient is very hard (although not impossible in theory).

Eitherway I think that if people want different skin, it'd be better to create it separately based on the old sprite rather then just recolor it. Different skincolors should go along with different facial characteristics and possibly even different hairstyles. Otherwise it will always look as if they used bodypaint.

Different hair styles is a problem and would require client mods to allow. Unless you want everyone to use them.
