[FND] City Lamps
[FND] City Lamps
Hey guys, I tried creating city lamps for Artis map. Different lamps, for other cities, will soon follow. In the mean time, I'd love to hear your comments about these first ones!

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
They look amazing. Seriously, good job. I really wish we had night time so we could see these light up the city!

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
Here is a new version. I tried fixing the perspective of the small details on the side frames.
Also, here is a test screenshot to give you an idea of how it looks like in game. Of course, there won't be as many as that in game, it's just to give you an idea.

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
Test of a different color palette, as per Reid's request.
The glass areas of these lamps have a 50% transparency as it was too close with the metal color palette.

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
I tried using the rusty sewer gates color palette. Between all the versions, I do prefer this one.
EDIT: New design added.

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
Great Job imo! I agree with the last version having the best colors - they fit well into the city palette and give good contrast on walls, grass and walkway. I am just not sure if I like the base, but cant tell what I would prefer .. perhaps a bit flatter, wider on the bottom, or more conical, with somewhat different colors.. ..
I also agree with WildX - Nighttime with lighted lamps would be awesome. Perhaps one day we can try to create that.

Agreed, so I tried reworking them. Tell me what you think. The Micksha wrote:I am just not sure if I like the base, but cant tell what I would prefer .. perhaps a bit flatter, wider on the bottom, or more conical, with somewhat different colors.. ..
Here are the latest versions of the lamps:
1. Using the rusty metal color palette: 2. Using a gold metal color palette:
Re: [WIP] City Lamps
The base looks better. Before the base had the same colours as the mud and blended in too much. The thing I'm missing the most now is the shadow. especially the south-facing wall lamp looks likes it is ironed against the wall.

+1 this work look really nice gongrats and thanks diferents color can be used for diferents city

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
I am not designing TMW, more like TMW2.0. That means recoloring is out of the question! The different colors you saw here were just to see which palette suits Artis the best. For other cities, I will create entirely new designs to give a different feeling to the city. For Hurnscald, for example, I'm planning something like a great torch on top of a wooden pillar, something like that.MAF-Saulc wrote:diferents color can be used for diferents city
Agreed, I didn't like it either tbh.EJlol wrote:The base looks better. Before the base had the same colours as the mud and blended in too much.
What do you think of that? (Makes me realize that I'm really bad with shadows )EJlol wrote:The thing I'm missing the most now is the shadow. especially the south-facing wall lamp looks likes it is ironed against the wall.
Re: [WIP] City Lamps
I'm bad with shadows too, so what I'm saying could be completely wrong. But shouldn't shadows be kind of "skewed" instead of rotated? Especially the lamp with 2 lights looks really weird at the moment IMO. I believe the horizontal part of the lamp, should also generate a horizontal shadow instead of diagonal. Then again, I could be wrong.
Re: [WIP] City Lamps
That's exactly what I thought too but I'm not sure either.EJlol wrote:I believe the horizontal part of the lamp, should also generate a horizontal shadow instead of diagonal.
EDIT: Maybe like this? EDIT: Or with less details in the shadows?
Re: [WIP] City Lamps
I much prefer this copper/rusty colour for the metal. It fits much better with the colours of the city.
Not to go too off-topic, but how difficult would it be to have a nighttime mask for the map and some lighting coming from the lamps?

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
The rusty palette fits more with the city theme, we already added too many marble.
As for the contrast, to me it's a bit too strong compared to other tiles, for example, look the light on the house, compare it to the contrast of the window or even of the group of barrel.
Also, you forget to shade an outline on the bottom of the lamp. Ah, a last thing, shadows shouldn't use a pure black color, on our tree tilesets we used the color #211e22.

Re: [WIP] City Lamps
Changed the color of the shadows.
Tried a new color palette for the metal parts of the lights.
Fixed the "foot" shading.
