I like the idea, to be honest, but i do see Crush's concerns also.

How about the event coordinator goes through the voting process, and if he or her gets the job, the ghp dictate the prize, and also are there to referee it.

In my events i always ask another gm to be present, it keeps it fair! It also allows for control of unruly players.

I was lucky that i joined the game when i did, i was able to get things like the eye patch and mouboo hat. These items are not obtainable anymore, that does suck some of the fun out of the game! thats my 2 cents!

The event coordinator could be a gm. It will be more official to people. :oops:

I thought of making some kind of "quest" with players involving a story, if anyone is interested /w TiaPeluca, or AuntWig :mrgreen:

Besides events for prizes, there could be spawn events, pvp events. Guilds ...
There are already such challenges that were already suggested by o11c (weapon-less nudist for example or one-death-and delete-character) that would require GM or event coordinator participation to be organized on a widerscale. We could also imagine team challenges such as put 4 players in a closed room and spawn an increasing number of mobs until everybody is dead (a kind of small no ending candor)
We can also imagine items which could be especially designed for extraordinary events: I already suggested the golden Mouboo (or Pinkie) awards which could be given to the friendliest player, the best troll, the developer-of-the-year... by the Manacademy (to be defined, one player = 1 vote, cheaters can be banned for a month or more, and their names are written to the wall of shame). Now we could have medals or that could be traded for more useful items in a dedicated shop.

We can also imagine mobs that could be designed for that purpose. Kage already had such a nice Idea that may be released soon. I thought about a kind of soccer-football for match where the ball would be a mob able to kill players, the team which kills the ball looses :) (extra possibility: pvp is enabled; weakening opposite players is allowed, killing is not).

This year could make us think about organize Manympiads:
  • Manathon a run between moving obstacles and/or mobs, no killing admitted (similar to a snake pit/mountain run maybe)
  • brawling/upmarmu chars pvp challenges
  • javelin or weight throws may require a lot of development work :?
  • Archery: Gwendolyn mini-game might be improved to be more visual, time could be used to separate equal archers...
...

That tileset uses 2/3 of a tile for each chess field. That way characters can not move on every field. So a chess game wouldn't be possible with that tileset. But it would be possible on Manaserv, because Manaserv has pixel-accurate movement.

This thread has really stirred up some great ideas for events.
I'm excited to see a renewed energy among guilds too. (http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopi ... 12&t=15935)

Let's use this enthusiasm to hold great events, but let's also use it to plan for after the momentum has faded in a few weeks.

An event coordinator would provide a sustainable mechanism to maintain interest and enthusiasm among people who play the game. Here are some specific ways they might achieve this:
- That person could be a central place for people to donate prizes.
- They could coordinate among groups who would like to host events: multiple groups might each want to host an event, but to have "their own weekend" to do it, rather than be surprised when another group announces a competition 3 hours before their own.
- They could use @broadcast to announce events.
- They could use @invisible or @hide commands to prepare for treasure hunts or to help with drop parties.
- They could start conversations about what new features might be useful for events (maybe like the chess dungeon) and collect what players ask for into a coherent set of suggestions and requests.
- They could spawn monsters for events.
- They would not get pulled aside to deal with unrelated issues like player conflicts or lag.

Let's first decide whether to create the position, then decide who should fill it -- not vice-versa.
Let's shelve the debate about @item and move on. It's controversial and so far, collectors have been willing to donate rares to use as prizes.
mistergrey wrote:I would like to ask for input from the other GMs, and from Administrators if possible, on whether an Event Coordinator could be used. If so, I believe that merits a discussion into whether they would have all they need with the available commands, and how to remedy the situation if the available commands will not suffice.
As Admin, I think an Event Coordinator would add value. At present, I often decline reasonable requests (by both players and GMs) to help with events. Not only does the number of roles I have in the game sometimes seem personally overwhelming, but I also believe it's important to have a role which is dedicated to this purpose, rather than trying to stretch GM/Admin enforcement/support/operations to cover it.
I suggest we make a "best guess" about what GM commands the role should have, then review it later and make adjustments as desired. I'd be happy to help with this.

Well I know as a developer I host my events such as the one I hosted today. The only commands I needed were @hide and @broadcast, it seemed Alot of people enjoyed it and it was a success. But @invisible was not needed and nor will it be for events imo.

Actually, while invisible may not be Needed... it can be useful. I've had some success doing drop parties invisible, which prevents players from being able to follow me, automatically or otherwise.

I'd say an event coordinator would need: @broadcast, @spawn, @killmonster2, and perhaps @recall to remove disruptive players from events (though a GM could be asked to do that if it seems a problem, I suppose). @invisible/visible could be useful, though not necessary. While a lot of commands could have a use, or be fun, chances are a coordinator could do a lot with even a few at their disposal.

I do think the @item topic will need to be addressed eventually, though. An event coordinator would not really need to be given such an abusable command, but in certain cases the extreme view on it is a bit counter-productive - some great events have been done using it (Freeyorp's prereleased pears come to mind, as a cool event with prizes that players felt good about, without it ruining game balance or collector's existing collections).

Though I cant really say @invisible would be useful still to the fact people wont be able to see the person and could get lost very easy (especially newer players who participate). I have the same feeling for @recall. Those 2 commands should be kept for GM use IMO.

Though I do remember Freeyorps pear event before it was released which I found cool. I kinda enjoyed seeing a small item like fruit in game before it was released it made it interesting.

Event coordinator required @commands may differ according to the kind of event which is organised. The minimum set which is already mentioned seems a nice one. @goto may be useful to control leveling contests such as o11C's challenges. Perhaps an admin could use the temporary command @adjgmlvl to satisfy a particular event's requirements?

Items: developers and administrators have to discuss about items which will be introduced or reintroduced into game because it has consequences upon TMW economy; some rares have to be reintroduced in game to prevent prices climbing too high, it has been done in the past, it can be done again. I suggest again intermediate reward items that could be traded later according to the chosen game politics in a special shop. (they could even simplify Platyna's job in her special events :) )
Though I cant really say @invisible would be useful still to the fact people wont be able to see the person and could get lost very easy (especially newer players who participate). I have the same feeling for @recall. Those 2 commands should be kept for GM use IMO.
Remember the "kill the invisible killer" events that were organised some (a long) time ago by Alons or CaptainAwesome. invisible, as Frost suggested is also useful to hide items that intend to be picked up by monsters and later discovered by players, Jael RD used this nice idea on a former funny event. With spawn it can be useful to prepare kind of traps (remember the mrgrey's original first spawn parties :') ) where surprise is essential.

Money and items to be introduced in game are decided by main developers and admins. A special account can hold them along with player's donations.

Time for me to jump in with some thoughts :)

I agree that this position could be beneficial to the community as a whole, everyone loves events. I particularly like some of Frost's ideas in one of his earlier posts too. Such a person could and should do those things.

In regards to commands I think would be useful for an event coordinator:
@broadcast
@localbroadcast
@storage (in case they forgot an item in storage that they might need)
@hide
@spawn
@kick (in case of players being obnoxious)
@warp
@killmonster2
If I feel any others are useful I shall edit this to include them.

I'm not sure if this was already said - but ANY abuse or misuse of these commands by the coordinator should lead to immediate dismissal, or at least suspension if the case is unclear and needs more attention/review.

I agree with Tiana on the commands except for @kick and @storage. @kick should only be for GM use because it is giving a character punishment and it does not prevent the person from logging back on to cause disturbance. @storage is kind of a lazy command I think anybody can just go to storage not far from the middle of Hurnscald to grab items.

but all the other commands could be very useful for an *Event*.

It seems you all answered the question wether to make the position „Event Coordinator“ available or not and answered it with yes. That's how it seems to me!
So now we've delt with one part of the problem.
Because you all moved on now to the discussion about GM Commands I'll comment on that as well. As I stated above I looked at http://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/GM_Commands when I found out about „Event coordinator“. (EC from now on)
I don't know if you think only that commands you listed above should be available for EC or how you wanna regulate this. So I base my suggestion on the current settings. Therefore I think the only Commands we should add to the currently available are
  • killmonster2
  • pvp on
  • killer
I just want you to understand what „process“ I use and why I chose that commands.

If I were to be EC and had to organize events, what commands would I use and what for?

I'd definitly use @broadcast and @localbroadcast to announce the event. (I don't think there's any discussion here, this is just for completeness) If it only were a trivia event I think I wouldn't use any other commands (leaving @item, @zeny aside because of contraversy)

Now if I were to make a spawn party I'd use @spawn to spawn some mobs, then oh god human error I typed 1401 instead of 1402, what to do now?! @killmonster2, puh that saved my ass, no drops though that's good. (btw I didn't look the IDs up just an example)

The other day I want to make a race. I therefore put down my alt somewhere, then announce the event while sitting in Tulim then I @goto my alt and therefor nobody can track where I've gone. The others found me and now I have to get back to Tulim. Oh boy that'd take for hours to get there... So I @warp back.

What about a drop party? I'll do it in the terra cave!... Damn I'm squishy Terranite just onehitted me... Sucks, gotta walk all the way back, Oh wait I got @warp! Ah and I also got @hide. That's awesome. Oh boy somebody just killed me. If I only used @save I'd respawn in Terracave. Whatever let's @warp back in. What the Duck somebody is autofollowing me ah wait @invisible!

Now what about a PvP event in the Short sword cave? I'd have to let everybody in while @killmonster2 all the mobs so people feel „save“ and then turn @pvp on and let them slice themselves apart while beeing harassed by mobs. That sure looks fun. Thanks to @hide @invisible I can watch while being save!

I'm not sure what to use @killer for but I think it can also aprove to be useful.

Now I want to comment on Chickas event on 5th of July 8pm. I think it's a perfect example why a Player alone cannot make every event possible. That's what an EC should do. It was short it was fun and it was based on @broadcast and @goto. (Check the logs for more information)

I also do like Mrgrey's idea about Eventpoints. We should decide what to buy with those evenpoints, and where to buy with it. I love the idea though!

What I think should also be said: An EC alone cannot make all events happen. I think it's impossible for one person to organize and conduct every event alone. ECs should be open to criticism and open to suggestions and help! If there were one or two ECs who work closely together and resemble a contact person for every player, that would be my ideal vision of this job. Then they could coordinate people, helping them holding events, making events on regular basis, with an event schedule.
We could make an event schedule where the EC enters the events known to him and then people can look at it an choose when to be online. This could be as simple as a Google calender everyone can view, but only some can edit.

so far tuX
