Re: Right to participate in GM polls

Post by Sunako »

On the flip side, I personally do not like how the GM polls have a eerie similarity to advertising campaigns, since not everyone who plays TMW has an account on the forums and not everyone who knows the candidate in-game, and has a forum account votes. So it's up to the candidate, or the candidate's supporters, to spread the word and drum up votes for the candidate, creating annoying spam.
The same could be said for political campaigns in real life, where the candidates for each political party buy TV time, mudsling each other, and fight for the media's attention, but on election day, all citizens know that the election will decide their life and civil liberties in the coming years (or their TMW gaming experience, as it happens) and make a conscious decision to vote for a particular candidate, or not vote at all.
And that's the difference that bugs me. Not everyone in the TMW community is aware that they have a voice (however small) in the appointment of GM's. I suppose it's a easy fix, with regular global announcements whenever a GM poll is started or closed, but that's not up to me to decide. I just ask that my concern be considered, and perhaps some action taken.

Sunako: Announcements have been made in the past advising people to vote, in general, and at times for polls running at the time. This was considered to be unfair by some, and AFAIK we still do not announce about anybody's GM poll in particular anymore.

As for the previous post, there are a lot of big problems with most of those possible solutions. Age and level requirements both give a Huge advantage to players with multiple accounts/characters, particularly those who can automate several at once and level simultaneously. As well, age requirements are easily passed by simply by logging in a character and idling. Almost every method of using game accounts to vote can be exploited very badly, because players have the freedom to have multiple accounts in game.

I actually have no idea how the access list for ManaMarket works (I'm thinking something along the lines of access lists for IRC and linked nicks?) but could the same rule of 1 vote per account be applied in this manner? It must get very complicated though .... an entirely separate entity just for a single flippin' vote.
And yes, I agree that many people can bypass the time limit by idling, (heck, I do it when I go off to read XKCD) so I was referring to char age, like the Easter Event.
I dunno, maybe I confused the 2. Sure typed a lot .... :?

What's about a real quest to get the condition to vote?
Quests are still requirement for other quests jet - so the player has to work, and not can use a bot (if the quest is a good ;) )...

Or indirect - a Player can vote if he/she has completed a totaly number of quests...

Here's an example.

I have more than a dozen characters in the game. Most are over level 70, and at least 5 are over level 90. 3 characters have completed every quest in the game, and the others have completed most quests.
At least 10 of my characters are over a year old.
My main characters typically sit in town while I play on another alt. Sometimes even my alt will become engaged in conversation, and I'll log on another character to smite monsters between lines of chat. "Hours in game" is quite high.

How many votes should I get?

P.S. The access list for ManaMarket is a very manual process. People request to sell, the MM admins (who are very experienced players including GMs) consider whether they know if that person has an alt that's already selling, and then the access is added via whisper commands to the ManaMarket bot. It is reasonably effective at limiting "sock puppets" but would be prohibitively time-consuming on a larger scale.

@ Sunako:
I actually have no idea how the access list for ManaMarket works [...]

There are 3 alternatives I see at the moment:

1. alternative: 1 vote for every real Person
Con's
- not enforceable

Pro's
- every "real" Person has the same right

2. alternative: every account whose char has donne a special quest get 1 vote
Con's
- not every "real" Person has the same right (primary lowleveled players)

Pro's
- the person realy spend very much time (like you) know more of the game and has more votes to affect it.

3. alternative: every account get 1 vote
Con's
- not every "real" Person has the same right
- the vote is highly unsignificant

Pro's
- as better for lowleveled players as 2. alternative

There is clearly no "perfect" of them, but whats the best way?

I think the option we use now is the best one though it could be altered. with these options above anybody can create 50 accounts and vote more than once or do a special quest more then once, so not everybody would have a say in voting because their vote will be over powered by sock puppets.

If you think so when this is right ;)

The quest was only an (maybe bad) idea to limit this a bit
