Perhaps this could be solved quite simply. There already was the idea of a modification in the client. So what about this:
Simply auto-end auto-follow, if leader or followers
1. are attacking, or
2. are using magic
and optionally (discussable):
3. are beeing attacked
4. sell or buy something.
While this does not 100% prohibit multiboxing, it makes it much more complicated, maybe even impossible, with the exception of the first fight location, where it still would be possible. But since then auto-follow would stop, any movement with the "primary" char would result in a loss of that multibox.
And this handling would still allow normal non-abusing usage of auto-follow.
Maybe there should apply a general pause for auto-follow, after ending it, to avoid bots simply repeat the auto-follow.
This would of course not help against real bots without GUI that handle it all without manaplus or similar.
What puzzles me is: How is that Tank/Healer combo supposed to work? If they both run stacked into a crowd of MOBs, would'n both be attacked? Would'nt the healer be wiped off very quickly? Maybe it would be a good idea to rewrite the MOBs to not change target if receiving damage from another target, before primary target is dead.
...just thinking...
Auto-follow, is it time for a change?
Re: Auto-follow, is it time for a change?
I've reread this thread from the beginning and now believe this rule has to stay as-is. I think this is very unfortunate as auto-follow has many legitimate uses.
There seems to be no way to allow use and prevent abuse of this feature without giving the GMs a *very* wide range of discretion. I fully trust the GMs but in the past when they have been given such discretion there were many accusations of unfairness from the players and community. Much drama ensued!
That being said.. I don't think this rule should be 100% enforced either.. If it's *very* obviously not being abused (such as a bunny conga line through town areas) I highly doubt the GMs would care (Would you?)

Re: Auto-follow, is it time for a change?
On germantmw this weekend we will elaborate a new type of event, where technically auto-follow is the base.
Before really starting the event we will have to investigate the prerequisites and framework, but if it works this might become an interesting new type of event.
