It does work with the current client. The current client is Mana 0.5. Here you can download a compiled version for windows: http://manasource.org/downloads
The speed quest gets my vote as the most annoying quest I've completed so far. You revamp your stats, then run half-naked through caverns of stacked snakes organized neatly exactly outside the necessary exits by your fellow players (and you, if you never thought to spare yourself this beforehand), and if you happen to die on the way (= are late), the entire thing starts over. For someone teaching "speed", clicking through the dialogues with extra "next"s thrown in for good measure took what felt like aeons. Particularly with a snake nibbling my thigh half the time.
Having now finally completed it, though, I have one hint that may spare you some grief: dump everything you don't need to storage, and when you go revamp your stats (what, you have agility of 60 naturally? Congratulations!), take the required 60 agility, the minimum strength you need (to be carrying only a third of your capacity), and then luck and vitality. You'll need luck for all the crit hits the snakes and their friends will make on you. You'll need vitality for all the regular hits everyone's going to be making on you. I wasn't thinking very clearly so I went for 99 vit and 23 luck, and died once on the way of exit-stacking snakes. So, have more luck than I did.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure that if/when you die on your way to Pachua, you will still have to walk to him first after you respawn before you can restart the quest.
Now to go reduce my blood pressure with some less stressful quests... X-)

You can die and then teleport to pachua using the scroll in the magic house and you get the speed skill.
Using 0.29.1 on my Mac, I can see and assign skill points to the new skills. Does that answer the question?
It's great to see new info about the skills, and tips about how to acquire them, added to this thread. Opinions about whether you like the skills, or the work of the developers, dilute the value of this thread and would be more welcome in a different thread.

i gave that guy all the eggs and then he told me that i am not yet ready to go on... so i figured i have to kill stuff with my bow... is that right? i just find it disappointing, that i have to do that, that i am not ready yet... i am level 85 and i used my bow for at least 40 levels...
As long as it's not about my eye...
CAUTION! Do not look into laser with remaining eye.
I have a character* with Resist Poison at level 6. Starting from skill level 1, I noticed that with each skill level he got poisoned less often, though he is not immune. The big difference is that he recovers very quickly: even Grass Snake poison lasts for only a few seconds. This is enough for him to battle snakes and scorpions without needing to run off and heal.
I think it's a useful skill in certain situations.

A Dementia Potion is needed to unfocus a skill when you want to focus on another.
After you have talked to Luca about it, you can go to Caul to make a minigame to get it.
Then you can bring the potion back to Luca to unfocus.
