Free programming compares to gamemaking programs as a huge empty piece of paper compares to a colouring book.
A colouring book helps kids get on the way and familiarise with simple tools. Yet it restricts freedom and creativity. After a few years some people leave the colouring book to rot and turn to destroying busstands others also leave the colouring book but pick a piece of blank paper and start experiencing now they have learned to control a pencil a bit. Now they can try to draw figures of their imagination and maybe even try painting and working with ink.
Ofcourse some people just skip the colouring book.
Those might just be the wisest words I've ever written.

I can really relate, for the most part. But I don't think a coloring book is a fair comparison, IMO.Modanung wrote:Free programming compares to gamemaking programs as a huge empty piece of paper compares to a colouring book.

Some of the game-maker engine scripters have really used it to their advantage and have created games hours long with original music and graphics. If you visit gamingw.net's forums (a sesspool for the most part), you can see screenshots for games being made in rm2k that blew my mind. Atleast that's the way it used to be. Most of the artists have left.
Anyway, it's like a haiku. The restrictions make it more interesting and it challenges you more to be original.
Working with restrictions isn't always bad. Everything has restrictions. Rm2k is pretty much over for me, but for some people, they really make it work.
