What OS do you use?

Talk about anything, including games and servers not affiliated with The Mana World.

Yea, and you actually believed in 64-bit support thing? :) WinXP 64 uses 32 bits and appends the rest with zeros. However some of 3rd party apps may use 64-bit. That's all.

Ever tried to install more than 2^32 bytes (~4GB) of RAM in a WinXP-32 system?

And no, that's not an artificial limit you could easily patch out of WinXP32. The x86 instruction set simply lacks any CPU instructions to address more than 2^32 bytes of memory. To use more memory you need a 64bit CPU AND an operating system with a memory management system which speaks to it using the new 64bit opcodes which can access this memory.

While there certainly are some core programs of the operating system which are still compiled in 32bit out of convenience or compatibility problems, the operating system kernel certainly isn't.

Yes. However 32bit systems can handle a lot more random access memory through PAE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension). Unfortunately not the winXP. There is no noticeable difference in machine performance between 32 and 64-bit version of winXP. Many components of system are still optimized for 32-bit.

Hurray! Another OpenBSD user! :)

OpenBSD and CentOS for home servers.
Windows XP and MacOS X for desktop use.
Solaris for occasional development (and probably for my future NAS).
IRIX and Digital UNIX for the occasional moment of nostalgia.
AIX when I'm nostalgic and masochistic (I still type "lspv" in Linux LVM).

For work it's mostly RHEL/CentOS Linux, a little Solaris, and sometimes Windows.

I love operating systems — I hope to install VMS this year — but I've never been crazy enough to run Plan 9.

Ubuntu 10.04-LTS on a Lenovo 3000 C100 (the Celeron 1.5GHz version of the C100, there's also a Pentium 4 1.7GHz version) with 2GB DDR 667MHz RAM (and it runs at 667MHz despite the 533MHz max claimed by the docs), 80GB Hard Drive.

I have a XBMC (XBMC Media Centre) that runs Ubuntu Netbook remix 10.04 running on a Dell Inspiron Mini 10. It has an internal 250GB hard drive and a USB-connected 500GB hard drive.

The Auldsbel.org Mana World server runs on Ubuntu on a hyper-threaded 3GHz Dell with 1GB RAM and an 80GB hard drive.

The development server also runs Ubuntu on an Athlon 64 with 1GB RAM on a 40GB hard drive.

My wife's system runs Windows 7 (though she only likes it for video MSN chat - she actually prefers Ubuntu for most things) and Ubuntu. She has an AMD quad-core system with 4GB of RAM and a 2TB hard drive.
