General announcement for Manaplus
Good morning tmw community,
I had a talk with BigCrunch and Prsm in-game about getting a global annoucement when a new version of the client "ManaPlus" is released. I've seen in the past days, that the "official" Mana client got some global messages to warn the players that a new version got released.
So my main question was: Is it possible to get a global annoucement for Manaplus too? The answer was no, mainly because Manaplus is not the official client.
Aside from that, ManaPlus is the famous alternative of Mana and also the most used client in The Mana World game. Even if it's not programmed from the same team who works in the tAthena server and tmw client, it should IMO get the same advantage that the Mana client, which is to get some general annoucement in game. Not every player goes to check the forums everyday, so they are not warned when a new version is published.
I would then want to ask the "Group Holding Power" if it could be authorized to get those general announcements.
Is it possible to proceed like the Friendly Bots? To get an authorization from the GHP if the Game Masters can do this for manaplus?
Thank you for an answer.

Re: General announcement for Manaplus
I think it would be pretty good, considering alot of people who play tmw use manaplus.

Hello Reidy :)
I am using manaplus too and if I start the manaplus client and if i would not use the newest client, then i would see a red text message about it at top of "Updating"-window (thats the window, where TMW-News are displayed).
Actually the message "You have latest client version" is displayed for me. Else a message like "There is a new version for manaplus out there" would be displayed in red letters. I like this method, so every manaplus user will be informed. No global announcements are needed, not for manaplus, not for official client. Global announcements are ineffective to reach all players, because not everyone is online each day and players are online on different times.
People, who starts playing with the old official client should get a message too at updating window, that they use old client version. So probably some fewer newbies would wonder about "Mystery Skills".
Actually the TMW-News display such information about new Mana Client 0.6.0, but after an easter event this message would not be displayed on the first view of TMW-News-window.

The Mana client is the official client, Manaplus is not. Using other clients than the official one is merely tolerated, not officially supported.

I like 4144 method to remember someone, that the client is out of date and a newer version exists. Everyone can it read at TMW-News-Login-Window. No extra global announcements are needed. Official Mana Client doesn't need some too, because a text about the new Mana Version is displayed at TMW-News-Login-Window too. Everyone can decide self, which client she/he likes more. For me as user, it would be cool, if both sides works together and respect each other. Probably i should post too, which features i really miss at official client. This project (not only client developing) has not so many developers, so work together and combine power to a great project. Okay its only a wish, but dreaming is allowed :)
And about easter event, its not related with the drop of support for 0.0.29.1 TMW client. I only wanted to mention, that the TMW-News-Window will be updated with new news at this event, so nobody can see anymore the text about the newest official client version, but the user should get an info, if she/he uses a client, which is out of date, like 4144 did.
Re: General announcement for Manaplus
The Mana development team is open to anyone. It was 4144s choice to not contribute to the development of the official client but to create his own fork of the client instead. There is nothing wrong with that. That's the purpose of free software. Not being bound by the conensus of the rest of the team allows him to experiment freely with gimmick features of questionable usefulness (like "crazy moves").Ginaria wrote:For me as user, it would be cool, if both sides works together and respect each other. When there are features from the 4144 client you would like to have in the official client, feel free to request them. But note that the Manasource team has usability and aesthetic standards - they won't accept a user interface which commmunicates with the user through cryptic one-letter codes in a menu bar, for example.

Re: General announcement for Manaplus
For the record, in its 8 years of existence, The Mana World has always announced new client versions in the game and client-side news. Nothing new there.
Now, ManaPlus is clearly a power-user client first and an improved Mana client second. In my opinion it's unfortunate that the improvements it made are lost in that power-user environment instead of being contributed to the official Mana client. A project like The Mana World can't officially endorse a project that demonstrates such lack of collaboration. It is in my opinion hurting us more than we gain from it.

Re: General announcement for Manaplus
Sorry, but I just don't get it.
Can't you just take the parts of manaplus code and implement it? Licence allows it...
Besides, this about hurting the development is just...
1. 4144 does is program alone, without having to deal with Crunchie's bazaars and yet his client is superior. It looks like he spends more time on coding, than dramas and meetings.
2. Official client looks a bit like no one cares. Why there is no silly things like online list?
3. Anyone under level 40-50 will need ALL of the program functions. And even young or not really tech-savvy people managed to learn how to use it.
4. Ban his client and see how many people will stay in game.

Re: General announcement for Manaplus
I dont think anybody is saying we should ban 4144's client, i think what he means is its hurting development on the client because more work is put into the manaplus client then the mana client itself and alot of people prefer it over mana. But i agree 4144 does put alot of time into his client and it is very handy to have.Derpella wrote:4. Ban his client and see how many people will stay in game.
Maybe the mana client can put some features from the manaplus client into it?

Someone is making a superior client in the way he likes it, without having to wait weeks before the GHP will accept his ideas, and is sharing his work with everyone! What a vermin! Maybe he should keep it to himself and friends. It would be OK then.Chicka-Maria wrote: i think what he means is its hurting development on the client because more work is put into the manaplus client then the mana client itself and alot of people prefer it over mana.

The fourth point is relevant, because it's a bit unfair saying someone who keeps 80% of the players playing as someone who is harming the development.
The games aren't about having the bestest code or graphics evur, they are about entertaining people. Software without users is not a good software.
