Ugh, that made me vote for pixel.
Anime eyes do *not* fit TMW's style.

Re: Client Dialog
I think the anime eyes fit just fine, I don't know if anyone recalls but there used to be an anime style sprite in the login wallpaper until they moved everything to the mana client

Re: Client Dialog
You can also do an anime sprite in pixel art, I don't see the problem.
Edit: There is a ton of anime head sprite in pixel art on DeviantArt if you need some idea, https://browse.deviantart.com/digitalar ... haracters/

Re: Client Dialog
I do not dislike the manga-esque style, but I do not think it is ideal for this game. Nor do I like Chicka's art (no offence, Chicka). The line work isn't clean, and the body proportions are all wrong.
I propose the art be created in a manner not dissimilar to HeroMachine. That is to say, created in a standardized modular fashion, with cut and paste facial features. That way there will consistency across the board with all characters, and if a new NPC is created then adding art work for that NPC should be as easy as slapping together a face with HeroMachine.

my choice: No face at all. The NPC can speak as players. I would prefer a special chat tab for NPC dialogs

Alright then lets see what you got in mind Kull. Draw us up a concept. The best way to show Maria would be by example. This way she can improve. So draw up some examples yourself and show her how its done.Kull wrote:I do not dislike the manga-esque style, but I do not think it is ideal for this game. Theres nothing wrong IMO with constructive criticism BTW. Just as long as you can back it up with examples and sketches.
I however think Maria has done a nice job personally. But hey lets give Kull the benefit of the doubt here and see how well he can sketch and draw up examples.

Moderator action: attack posts and replies hidden.
This thread is for legitimate discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of NPC portraits.
FWIW I like Kull's suggestion about modular facial features.

I can't have an opinion on art without becoming an artist, you say? Do you realize how stupid that sounds?Johnny wrote:Theres nothing wrong IMO with constructive criticism BTW. Just as long as you can back it up with examples and sketches.

I don't think we should focus on the face of an npc that is an addition and not a need, what we do need is a tab with the NPC dialogue that help the player to keep track of the things he asked to bring back or the direction the player must go.
I still have my paper notebook were I used to take notes of the items i needed, the NPC tab can really improve the game.
The face is an extra and I assume it will be more like a pop up with the dialog than a real useful tab.
And about that i think that if we are all pixel characters a pixel NPC portrait will suit the game better.
Re: Client Dialog
So you mean keeping this tabs open all the time?
Also i think npc tabs are rather different than chattabs. You always have only a single active choice (either choice between replys or number/string input).
I do not get how a simple "list" of the things a npc said would help?

Re: Client Dialog
+1 i agree with this, the main reason for this thread is to make the npc more appealing and the npc dialog window. adding a tab wouldnt make it more attractive to read.Ablu wrote:I do not get how a simple "list" of the things a npc said would help?

Re: Client Dialog
I don't care if it is attractive, none of the actual tabs are cute and fluffy, I think we need another tab, we do have a trade tab open all the time why cant we have a npc tab open all the time? I think we are focusing this wrong, we must have things useful in game, not only nice things that look good but useless.
Right now when an npc ask us for things we read it in a pop up windows, now we are talking about adding a face to that tab, the thing is is the same thing but nicer, the main reason for me at last, to add anything is to improve the game so why can we for example have a pop up window more colorful with portraits or not but ALSO a really useful tab with the info we must remember to finish a quest? That will have a real purpose beyond the cute looking pop up
