Family members that connect from the same IP

Post by blackrazor »

Hi, I figured I would start a topic like this, and other families / friends in a similar position can add to it if they so desire.

I know that many games implement an additional, and totally understandable level of security when they see multiple simultaneous logins from the same IP. Often these games ask, even sometimes require, that players post names of family and friends that will be sharing the same IP.

So here goes:

me: Selenil
wife: deedee
eldest daughter: Kawthar Malak

I also have a younger daughter that has played very rarely, perhaps only once or twice. If she starts to play regularly, I will add her to the above list.

We usually connect on the same IP, but it is from an out-of-province telephone service provider that offers great prices and (nearly) unlimited bandwidth, better than we can obtain locally. It uses PPPoE, so there will be a dynamic range of IPs from which we all connect. It will also show us as if we are in the province where the provider is located, and not where we are actually located, owing to the way in which they connect us to the internet, over which we have no control.

In addition, our eldest daughter has her own home, so sometimes she might connect from there. She uses the same internet service provider there as well, so the range of IPs should be the same, although the specific IP (at any given time) will be different of course, if she is connecting from there. In practice, she usually connects from the same IP as the rest of us, as she tends to play when she visits us.

Well, thanks for being forthright I guess.

TMW does not currently have a policy stating that family members must identify themselves. I can see circumstances in which it might be useful.

Posting this does not change the fact that, if any of you break the rules, a ban will likely be enforced against all family members.
This only helps in case of botting accusations and the like.

As far as I know the rule is; "no more than 5 chars with same IP."
I suggest you don't go beyond the limit without an explicit agreement of a GM or Admin.
Playing in family is rather fun. I wish you the best!

there is no limit on characters. having multiple characters playing at the same time will get you bbotchecked, but as long as each character can follow directions, there is no worry

This limit of 5 chars on the same IP (thus 5 accounts connected) was told me by a GM after the removal of rule #7 against multiboxing in 2010 (maybe beginning of 2011). I didn't even think to verify. But I could see that some of my multichar friends still always respect it. ;)

Blackrazor, welcome to you and your family! :)

As mentioned earlier, there's no problem if many people play from the same IP address. If there is a question whether you're really just one person running bots (and bots typically behave in ways that would indicate medical problems if a human were playing), then it's easy to demonstrate that you're not.

As the old saying goes: "The family that plays together...has fun together."

I'm not aware of any games that actually enforce this (haven't encountered it myself). I think this would be a very difficult rule to enforce in a lot of situations. At my university we had about 3k gamers split across maybe 32 public IP addresses, and we weren't a very big campus.

there is actually an easy way to determine if the multiple instances of IPs is one person or multiple people. In essence just ask them to do different actions or movements at roughly the same time.
