Mana client 0.7 released

The 2009 Mana project went dormant around 2014 and was revived in 2023; it currently develops a client implementation for TMW and potentially other games.

Mana client 0.7 released

Post by Bjørn »

Hear hear! With the release of Mana 0.7, the Mana client can once again be used to play The Mana World.

Get it from manasource.org/downloads!

Check out beautiful Hurnscald at x2 scale with crisp fonts and Jewelry theme (Golden Delicious is available as well!):

To support current TMW, a lot of new features had to be added, like:

  • Per-character gender and the "other/neutral" gender
  • Particle effects on equipment
  • Quest markers and Quest window
  • Player item sprite replacements
  • Text formatting in NPC dialogs
  • Etc. etc.

Check out the full list of changes in the repository.

While this is a huge update, probably the biggest client release ever, I know many of the current players that are used to M+ or Manaverse will miss a feature here and there. This is where I hope some might be motivated to start looking into making their own improvements to the client. Maybe bringing your favourite M+ feature to Mana, or maybe something else entirely?

Whatever happens, I hope there will be people enjoying this new release. I certainly enjoyed working on it!

I have tried the client a few times now. It runs very smoothly (Win10 ). I think that adopting the popular themes like Jewelry was very good for Mana. It really feels like a decluttered Manaplus that is also building its own identity and already has more personality (M+ felt a bit like a spreadsheet).

I'm always in favour of returning things to a better, simpler version. A lot of our projects become bloated by years of updates that don't often follow the same plans over time. I wish this thinking could carry over to server development and apply the same principle to TMW. Repolish what worked well in the past and it may be better than any further feature/content bloat.

The only thing I prefer in M+ is the online list. It does make more logical sense to group it in the social window, but the dedicated online status window from M+ just seems like a more advanced and efficient tool.

Are we going to see Mana as the official client once again at some point? :P

I like some things about Mana. Namely, how it loads maps and scrolls, that's just enjoyable. Also less buggy handling of impersonation compared to M+/MV. There's still a lot of things to catch up / improve any day. But its nice to see someone like Brorn "back in business".

On funny note I think I started playing on Mana 0.27 or 0.28 or something. So I'm somwhat nostalgic about my newbie days in TMW.
