The number of logs is variable. For every log you bring to the boyer master there is a 1 in 20 chance that it will work. When you are lucky the first one will work. When you have bad luck you can bring tons of logs to him and they all crack.

But where are the logs? Because I have killed three trees and they didn't drop anything... also I can't see any more living trees, I saw only three after looking for them in the map for half an hour. The first three appeared quickly nad then disappeared. How often do they spawn?

A while ago there was a bug causing the monster population on that map to stagnate continuously. But this bug has been fixed.

The Stumpys respawn immediately. But they do so at a random location on the map and there aren't many of them. So you might have to search for a wihle.
