I was thinking about having an event that was held outside of TMW, but the reward would be inside of TMW (that is, 200k GP.) The competition would be about who can come up with the coolest computer program that uses numbers from a self-created lab experiment to come up with a cool conclusion.
For example, I use a thermometer to collect the temperature of hot water from boiling to a cooler temperature at 30 second intervals. I then graph the temperature of the water into a line graph. Perhaps even stating the rate of change of the temperature over time, or how much thermal energy left the boiling container.
Would anyone be interesting in collecting numbers from our reality and using knowledge of physics/chemistry/biology/statistics to use those numbers and make interesting conclusions/observations about our reality using computer programs or a programming language to make the magic happen?
An Event for Computer Programmers?
Re: An Event for Computer Programmers?
well, I regard your interest in science and math, and encourage your pursuit of such interests. I unfortunately I don't think this is the proper forum for such things. There is a broad range of people that play TMW, and I imagine that a lot of people may play the game as a substitue for their own reality, or as a place to allow their imagination's run wild, etc. I find it interesting interacting with people from all over the world, and trying to trade with those that don't speak english, or trying to explain something to them in a game, when I can barely understand them, and they can barely understand me.
A lot of the bells and whistles that make TMW tick are transparent to the user, but their basis is that of math and computer science. If you somehow want to incorporate your interests into the virtual world, by all means go for it. There could be a little niche for everything in TMW, and grows as fast as those that contribute. For instance, if you wanted to program up a little NPC script with some of your ideas, have it contained within the scope of the game, that'd be great. Have a mad scientist NPC in an apothecary asking you riddles or something, lol, i don't know, you get the idea.

Well, the key to this type of event is that the eyes don't have to be on the monitor. Plus, the NPCs restrict creativity with ideas. My eyes have been strained by the monitor, so I thought it might be cool to have a non-computer, and therefore, outside-of-mana-world event. However, I see what you mean by being too seperate from the Mana World, and that a non-mana-world event is equivalent to an "irrelevant to Mana World" event lol.
I suppose I'll have to think of some ideas on how I could possibly integrate reality competition into the Mana World somehow... perhaps with human-controlled NPCs. Or NPCs where their quest changes daily, with a new scientific riddle? Or weekly? Or a TMW trophies and online award system for reality competition that is placed on a third-party Web site? Herm....
