Speaking english in public areas
As of late it's been unreal the huge amount of players that suddenly entered TMW, who refuse to speak English in public areas. Several have asked them to do so for days. Generally they do so for a short time then revert back to foreign languages. Thus, we know they are capable, yet they choose not to. I feel its rude. One hates to put them on ignore as they might want to speak with you in English in the next moment.

What's wrong with speaking your native language?

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they are referring to rule #5.

Re: Speaking english in public areas
The problem is that the more people we have speaking a language, the more people who can only speak that language hear about the game. Thus, we get the Portuguese Language epidemic of '07.

Re: Speaking english in public areas
It was my understanding that this server was an English Speaking server for public areas.
There is a Portuguese Brazilian based server for those that can't or don't want to speak English.
When i am in France, I speak French and when I am in TMW, I speak English.. simple enough....

Re: Speaking english in public areas
Well, I speak other languages than English in TMW now and then. But keeping it out from the crowded, NPC/resource rich places. And if other players come along it’s just to switch to English or use whispering (if the client is enough up to date). Happy happy joy joy, happy happy joy joy!
Well, at least in the newer client there will be a much more extended chat, so then â€â€Â as long as the game rules allow it â€â€Â there could perhaps be specific language (group) chat channels or something.

Too bad the Germanic -> Romance translation, or vice versa for that matter, isn't smoother. The internet would be a much more understandable place.

What madness is this?
What world is this?
Where is Jesus?
Each place a place, every place a rule, every rule a reason, I always respected.

karol: The problem is that the more people we have speaking a language, the more people who can only speak that language hear about the game, play it, and make it impossible for people who speak english to interact with other players. Seriously, knowing English needs to be a requirement for internet accesskarol wrote:sugar.

Re: Speaking english in public areas
I'm strongly against forcing English only in-game. You are most likely to find someone who speaks English with relative ease within a minute.
If you get afraid and lonely in an environment where you don't understand what is going on, go hide under your bed or something. If you flip it around: how about the people who don't know English, but have local friends? We're a world community, not a tool to make English into a more popular of a language.
For the forums, wiki and such, of course there needs to be a common language set, but that is rather different. Here it really matters if everyone understands each other. (Still it doesn't count out translating relative parts of the wiki into other languages by the users for ease of usage.)

Re: Speaking english in public areas
The rule is set and is not a subject for discussion anymore.
* Any person catched breaking the rules will be banned.
* Use /whisper.
* Any thread challenging the rules again will be instantly closed. Not because censorship, but because the subject was discussed gazzilion of times and it already becomes boring.
* I am Polish, and I do value my native language very much. So there is no need to make up plot theories that I want you to speak English, because I am British/American and hate foreign people.
Regards.
