Watching TV while attacking [please move to Player talk]

Post by Vink »

crazy wrote:i do not move sometimes for 1 hours or more when i pay more attention to TV than the game (so sometimes i do not even see drop's) (that is reason i use bow instead of sord). then i play normal ( moving ) untill next time something interesting is on TV. When i do not pay many attention to the game i stay on the excact same point almost every time.
This explanation is very interesting. Personally, I don't see why a) killing while being by the keyboard physically but not paying attention to the game, would be significantly different from b) killing while being physically away from the keyboard. In my opinion, both a) and b) can be considered cheating. I mean, it's one thing if you sometimes turn around to see what's happening in the kitchen or something, and then you will still be able to notice drops and people who are trying to talk to you. But paying more attention to TV or whatever while attacking is not really fair play, if you ask me. You're then "mentally afk killing", I would say.

Sure, here's my advice: If you're killing monsters in the game, don't watch TV at the same time. If you're watching TV, don't kill monsters in the game at the same time. If you want to stay in the game while watching TV, make sure you don't attack anything. Preferably, sit!

Will tomorrows evolution of the rules require us to play with the sound on and the volume at maximum?

What are you talking about? The rules haven't changed much since Platyna stated them.

jaxad0127, I was referring to Vink's post when she said,

I was crudely suggesting the addition of an audible cue to a player from any GM. This may alert the player that he is possibly going to be banned for violating the GM's 'feelings' of what the rules are at that moment in time.

There's a lot going on in the world today (and September). I keep my television on when I'm ingame. If something happens outside, I'd like to know as events unfold, but at the same time stay alive in the Mana World. I don't want to be banned simply because I did not sit per the GM's command. That can be in the rules if Vink doesn't want us to stand around. I'll abide.

For what it's worth, I've seen my player character standing in one window and sitting in another. Other times, facing east in one and south in the other.

"mentally AFK killing." What are you the thought police?

If he responded after a minute or two, who cares. However, he didn't respond to chat for like an hour, and Trelos was probably botting. Ironically, you are ready to condemn stand-still xp camps as botter havens and people who watch TV as botters, but Trelos was never banned for getting caught red handed.

Now you're showing your true colors: anyone who is not fully immersed in the awesome fun of holding down 2 keys and tapping a 3rd one to move in circles must be a cheater, if not a full blown bot. However, if this person is well-liked by HMC elites, they get a free pass. What a load of paranoid, self-righteous nonsense. You should not be a GM with this attitude.

Vink did not ask for you to always sit when you are away from your keyboard, only not to engage in game activities (specifically killing monsters). The `preferably sitting' part would make it easier for GMs, I presume, but the `preferably' aspect means clearly indicates that this was not meant as a requirement. So don't worry. :-)

On the other hand, GMs have hard enough a job as-is, so please don't put words in their mouths.

Who made that claim, when? I could not find a corresponding statement in the preceding posts. Please cite.

When was a person that meets your description caught by a GM but not banned (presumably for the above reason)? I am not aware of such a case. Please provide evidence of the claimed GM power abuse.

Was that a reference to the last part of your writing (i.e., were you parodying someone else), or is it a reference to something else? Please clarify.

Of course there's no problem with having the TV on, and of course sitting is not a requirement. I'm kind of impressed that you can draw such wild conclusions from what I said. :)

The way the rules are read (and have always been read as far as I know) is that it's perfectly fine to be idling while being away, but whenever you do something that interacts with the game -- killing, picking up items etc. -- you are expected to be mentally engaged enough to answer simple questions.

If you're not paying attention for several minutes and keep attacking, you are not mentally engaged, but rather what I called mentally afk. If you are away (for more than a few moments) in one way or another, you should not continue to kill monsters.

You suggested that those who pay more attention to the TV than the game are "mentally afk." This is absurd.

As I said in this post
I do have hard feelings, because your "side" seems to be that those of us who would rather pay more attention to the TV than to arrow keys are lazy and generally "wrong," and that pressing arrow keys while xping is somehow more noble and fun. No. Killing things in TMW is currently pretty boring. Working on things like magic, equipment, items, etc. will do far more to curb botting than ruining perfectly good xp spots and rationalizing the mistake rather than fixing it.
FURTHER, while you are ready to condemn those watching TV, Trelos was never actually banned as the result of this thread, because there were no GMs yet, and Wombat is obviously a liar (read: not in HMC). (See this thread for more related idiocy).

I thought it would be obvious that I meant that people are mentally afk in relation to the game if they pay more attention to TV while they engage in activities such as killing monsters in the game. I have not said that there's something wrong with watching TV per se, nor did I imply such a thing.

I don't know how you got the idea that I condemn those watching TV. As I said the whole time, the problem is when people continue to attack monsters in the game without paying any attention to the game, for example because they are watching TV instead. I don't recall that I have ever called Wombat a liar, neither will I do so unless perhaps if he is proven to be that.

Watching TV takes more attention than killing things in TMW. You are blaming TMW players for this. That is insane.

Note: This topic was originally part of Bat Cave Bots Sept. 4th. The person quoted in the first post, crazy, is Trelos Reloaded.

I maintain that watching TV is no excuse for not paying any attention to the game when you're killing monsters.

I think giving a few minutes for a response like y'all have reported doing is ample time for someone to collect their bearings and respond. Usually, if I'm not mistaken, someone reports a botter before GMs act, so if the player wasn't botting, there is little reason they wouldn't respond.
Current character is "Abolish".
