CPU usage survey
CPU usage survey
I just noticed something interesting about CPU usage.
Windows XP, 0.0.26:
Intel Core2Duo E6600 @ 2,4GHz:
60fps -> 50% (100% one core)
30fps -> 5% (10% one core)
OpenGL enabled
Ambient FX high
Particle detail high
(Settings out of the box, except for the 30fps limit for the test.)
Tested in Tulimshar, near the Soul Menhir.
Intel Core2Duo E6600 @ 2,4GHz:
60fps -> 20% (40% one core)
30fps -> 10% (20% one core)
OpenGL disabled
Ambient FX high
Particle detail high
(Settings out of the box, except for the 30fps limit for the test and OpenGL disabled.)
Tested in Tulimshar, near the Soul Menhir.
Could people post in this thread:
1) What CPU you have
2) What kind of cpu usage you get with a) 60fps limit b) 30fps limit
3) Scenario in which tested
Thank you for your feedback in advance.
P.S. This is starting to look fishy. Enabling OpenGL seems to use more CPU. With OpenGL disabled, it's giving me the kind of results I was expecting.
P.P.S. If you're going to say something about the login screen CPU usage: http://mantis.themanaworld.org/view.php?id=9

Re: CPU usage survey
AMD Athlon X2 64 6000+ (3.0 Ghz Dual Core)
30fps -> 30%
40fps -> 58%
60fps -> 69%
140fps -> 88%
Tested in Hurnscald near the Soul Menhir, max particle quality, high ambient fx, OpenGL turned off.
EDIT: Data with OpenGL Enabled, same location, same particle qualities:
30fps - 30;
40fps - 60;
60fps - 91;
140 - hovers around 100fps with 93%

Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.
Re: CPU usage survey
In theory OpenGL mode should require less CPU because it should do graphic calculations on the GPU instead of the CPU.

You might have heard a certain rumor about me. This rumor is completely false. You might also have heard the other rumor about me. This rumor is 100% accurate.
Re: CPU usage survey
We use immediate mode, which is considered worse than not using hardware acceleration at all by some peopleCrush wrote:In theory OpenGL mode should require less CPU because it should do graphic calculations on the GPU instead of the CPU.

Perhaps we should look into updating to using OpenGL 2.0.

Re: CPU usage survey
With OpenGL enabled, many more effects are used. That is likely offsetting the performance gain.
Re: CPU usage survey
As far as I know there are no major graphic effects which are disabled in software mode. The most demanding ones, overlays and particles, do not care about software or OpenGL mode.

you want in linux OS or only for windows users?

Re: CPU usage survey
Performance should be platform independent, so I'm assuming all platforms here.
I should probably have mentioned my results were using Ubuntu Linux Intrepid (8.10) 64bit
