Kicking dead players

Post by Michard »

GM MasterKenobi recently posted:
Also, It has been brought to my attention that the practice of kicking "dead" players is something GM's won't be doing anymore. Unless of course they are breaking the rules in some way.
I think dead players are still being kicked. What is the status of this policy?

What makes you think that?

Do you often reply to a question with another question?

My friend's dead character was kicked shortly before I posted the initial question.

What's the big deal anyways? Most of the times if the dead person is lying there for a while, he's been botting or he's decided to go do something else and leave TMW up. If he gets kicked, what happens when he comes back? Oh no.. the hassle to take 1 min or less to re log in?

If a player's character is lying dead for quite some time (I'm talking several hours, now -- an obvious case of AFK), what's the problem with kicking him/her off the server? Those who manage the game are, in my understanding, perfectly within their rights to deal with dead bodies as they see fit:
  • In any real situation a body wouldn't be left in public. Why should players walk past DeadNoob time and time again? It's not like a GM is going to issue a command that will revive the player. And that player's not gettin' any XPs by lying there.
  • Sometimes players die deliberately for a gag or for some other non-offensive reason (they're listening on a conversation to hear the ending, etc.). This is an obvious exception. The player is producing emotes showing they're not AFK. A GM should ignore the situation and carry on. If not, then the body should be given a proper burial.
Making demands like: "My dead character should stay on screen while I leave for work for 8 hours" is unreasonable.

That's my 2¢ worth ... and someone owes me change.

I ask because MasterKenobi's statement about GMs no longer kicking dead characters seems to be at odds with what I've witnessed in game. No offense, but I am not interested in the opinions of players on this matter. I am seeking clarification from GMs on GM policy.

MK, you seem to be suggesting that this will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Do I have that correct?

I did see him state what your quote says, but again, what's the big deal?

"He kicked me while I was dead for several hours because.. I have been previously botting or I have been afk!.. Please fire this GM!"

Oh, and if your not looking for others input, feel free not to answer.

You're taking quite a leap to put those words in my mouth. I am not trying to get anyone fired. I am trying to understand GM policy on this matter.

Again, no offense, but I am not looking for player input. Only GMs have the information to answer my question. Player input is just noise.

Sorry if I came over offensive.. When I said feel free not to reply, I meant just ignore what I have to say then.

And did not put those words in your mouth. Just being a little sarcastic. Showing that it isn't really a big deal. If it is to you, again: Why?

A hassle..?, Hatred towards GM's..?, Or..?

No worries, mate. And I apologize if I came off as rude.

I like to know what the rules and policies are when I play a game. I feel it's absolutely necessary. And I prefer the rules and policies to be clear, concise, and consistent. Ideally, they would be documented on the wiki.

You are correct Michard.

The information I have is:

"Bjorn says there is no need to kick dead players"

If I get anymore information beyond that I will pass it on too you.

The only reason I kick a dead player is if they are breaking the rules, but there could be other reasons I am overlooking hence the "case by case basis".
If you(or anyone) has a concern why a player was kicked feel free to ask. :) In the case of your friend, you can ask Doorsman why he kicked him/her. When I talk to Doors I will ask as well.

If we're ever going to have a server load problem because of idle players the solution will be automated server side kicking.
