The symbol can be in 'appreciation' of mana, which all people know exists and was gifted by the gods.
I could think of fifty reasons why there would be one symbol for gravestones. Raphael's point that the cemetery might only allow one symbol is good enough reason to come up with at least ONE symbol to idolize, and definitely the who/what it represents can be considered later.
