Which mean in order to solve the equation you need to define the things. You cannot assume that the things do not exist, you have to define them. Any problem solving past this point is invalid. You understand that.

How do you know the first ratio is not oranges and the second is not apples. You can not assume that you are adding the same ratio of the same THING.

So the question is invalid.

For the love of god read a math book.

This only works if you are dealing imaginary numbers. And then it is without units and invalid.

No. That "red", "green", and "blue" are "primary colors" deals entirely with the way we perceive colors and is not something inherent to light. it is not a english problem, he does not understand basic math.

A colon (:) in math is universal. It stands for a ratio, period. If you are creating a problem in which the the objects are know you use a fraction (as in 1/2). If you are using creating a problem in which two or more objects exist you use a colon for example, 1 of the 2 fruits was a orange. That would be 1:2. You do not know, or even care about the other fruit, only that it exist and is not a orange. The objects are know, she made 1/3 of all free throws.

Only when you are using proportions can you use the :. For example. 1:3 of free throws where made.

But both ratios and proportions do not consider total, only a reflection on the quantity in the total.

This is why the math problem fails. Because you cannot drop the units to solve. You need to define the units. Before you can solve.

If the units where know, then the problem would either A state the units, or B use a fraction to reflect the units where known.

Math is universal. This is not a question of english or not.
