Pachua the Hermit Indian - Item Creation Issue

Hello all,
Per the Wiki - and other helpful players, it is believed that Pachua will create Leather Patches with Snake Skins. I however am unable to obtain anything other then Cowboy Hats. I have Snake Skins but with out anything else he will not dialog for Leather Patches to be crafted.

Get in the shield is a quest of sorts and things need to be done in order. You won't get a patch until Nicholas tells you to get one. That means ore and helmet are first.
