Poll: Eliminate GM polls?

Post by bcs86 »

Good reasons to have a GM poll:
  • It looks like democracy.
  • Popularity contests are fun.
Good reasons to stop it:
  • It makes us look and feel stupid.
  • It costs maintainers more time than it is worth.
  • There are never more than 200 people who play.
  • Banning bots is over-rated.
Revote if your mind has changed.

"Good" reasons huh.

Lets actaully look at these reason

* It makes us look and feel stupid.
Who is us, the community of players or the ghp? And what do you think is stupid about allowing people to vote for gm? Is a democracy shameful to you? What it really looks like is you care for the community. That you respect them and trust them to make decisions that envole their game play. If that makes you stupid, I am sorry. It makes the game look like a community supported and backed game. If you are ashamed of the community. Then please let us help you? How are we shameful?

* It costs maintainers more time than it is worth.
How much time did it take to get rid of doors and del? Doulos? I can not tell how much time it takes, because that information is never shared. But I would think having gm's controlling the day to day activities that are support and loved by the community would take less time then ones that are hated. Just my two cents here.

* There are never more than 200 people who play.
200 people that love and care about this game. And would follow you to the gates of hell to save it. If a loyal following is not what you want then ok, I understand. But you have it. If you allow the community to help, you will be surprise what can happen. Like 2 of the best gm's this game has ever seen, voted by the people for the people.

* Banning bots is over-rated.
Then why even have rules, just let everyone do what ever they want to. If you honestly believe this then we have found the root of the issues with the ghp. Bots currently have destroyed the economy. With out any check on them, the game will turn into a 2 d chat room with everyone doing and saying anything. It is a game. And in every online game I have heard of bot are not allowed, period. The only person that wants bots, dont want a game.

If this is the honest opinion from the group holding power, then things are worst then I thought.

I strongly disagree with the argument that those polls are shameful, community should have their part in decision making because GMs are closer to the community than the developers at all.

Delasia and Doulous case is a clear evidence that community demanded influence over who is a GM, but also it is an evidence that a stong decision making force is needed - as I was called by the community itself to handle the issue, despite the fact I left long time before. Now the force controlling the community is that community itself plus GHP with regulatory bodies like me for community issues and Bjorn for development issues. I think it is a very good mix of Shalon's participatory politics doctrine and consensus decision-making and good old Roman democracy (where the elected bodies coexisted with the authoritative ruler). The results seems to be satisfying, as it is clearly visible now, community is more about playing the game than power trips that are so common and destructive in similar projects

Indeed, I think it is irrelevant how many people play this game, quality over quantity.

The only person that wants bots, don't want a game.
This is eternal clash between the game play that should be fair, and the desire of programmers to have max people bug hunting, as it improves the software itself. But there is already a thread to discuss this issue, so we shouldn't raise it here.
If this is the honest opinion from the group holding power, then things are worst then I thought.
I think it will be a lot better to avoid such hysteric assumptions.
