[ SPOILERS ] Walkthrough for Tulimshar Quests

Post by foxmajik »

First talk to Bernard and Mikhail in the Bazaar north of the Sand Storm.

Next do these in this order:

1. Sarah - Requires 1 Cherry Cake, reward 1 Serf Hat

Get cherry cake by exchanging your monster points for goods with Ishi at the Tulimshar Bizaar directly north of the Sand Storm.

2. Vincent - Requires 10 bug legs, reward 1000 gold

Get bug legs by killing maggots.

3. Sandra - Requires 5 scorpion stingers, reward 1 Bow 100 Arrows

Get scorpion stingers by killing scorpions.

Hmm, Sandra used to require 10 scorpion stingers and 1 red scorpion stinger. I guess the newbs have gotten soft.

Having done that, to get on with the major quest:

4. Talk to Lieutenant Dausen. Get him 10 cactus drinks. You can buy them at the potion shop in Hurnscald.

Lieutenant Dausen - Requires 10 Cactus Drinks - reward 1 Boots

5. Go talk to Stewen. Stewen is at the entrance to the Eastern Desert, which is east of the Sandstorm. Next go back to Lieutenant Dausen again. Then go southwest to the mine and talk to Nickos. Then go back (sigh) and talk to Lieutenant Dausen again.

Note: Watch out for black scorpions. They will come up to you and kill you while you're busy talking to people.

6. Lieutenant Dausen again - Requires all the steps above - reward 500GP WOOOO! 500GP! So generous.

7. Talk to Nickos in front of the mine. He will give you permission to enter. Go in and talk to Nathan and Naem. Nathan is right near the entrance. Naem is southeast of the entrance.

Watch out for the mobs. All of the mobs in this cave are agro and move extremely fast. They will kill you while you're talking to people.

8. After you talk to both guys in the mine go back and talk to Nickos again.

Nickos - Requires the above steps - reward 500GP.

9. Go talk to LD yet again, then go talk to Nickos, yes, again.

Remember, this whole time agro mobs are coming at you from all sides to attack, so click and read fast.

10. Go back in the cave and talk to Nathan, then walk back and forth between him and Naem for an hour or so carrying crap.

After your third trip you get a Miner's Hat. OMG so much defense! Yeah no. You can buy it right outside the mine for a few GP.

11. Go outside and talk to Nickos again. Then go back in the cave and kill Angry Scorpions for an hour or so until you get ten stingers (this is what they call adding replay value in the video game industry -- instead of being creative and giving the player something fun to do for hours on end, you just make them repeat the same tasks over and over just like they do at work to give them that wholesome satisfying feeling of having accomplished something).

Note: You'll notice after a while all the mobs will disappear but they'll still be attacking you. This is because the number of mobs surrounding and trying to attack you lags the client so it can't display all the creatures. The only fix I've found is to restart the client.

12. After you're done getting 10 angry scorpion stingers go talk to Nikolas yet again and collect your useless leather shield, which you've probably already bought somewhere else and replaced with at least a wooden one by now.

13. Now go talk to Naem to get the barrier key. But guess what? He doesn't have the key! You get to go talk to LD again. Meanwhile, as you're spending a minute and a half talking to Naem, mobs are killing you and you can't fight back because the NPC's dialog prevents you from attacking.

14. Go talk to LD again and get the key. Then go back to the mine. Again.

15. The astute reader will notice buttons along the walls inside the mine. The mines must have the key inserted into them and have the key turned in the right direction and in the correct order in order to continue with the quest.

The scripts for the direction to turn the keys and the order are clearly readable in the script for the cave, so I'm not telling you anything you can't get from the source code. Anyways, here's the order:

Left button: Turn the key right
Bottom right button: Turn the key left.
Top right button: Turn the key left.

Remember all this time mobs are attacking you.

16. Go down to the southeast of the cave so Nathan can give you a pair of Miner's Gloves that you've probably already bought or looted for yourself by now. If you haven't, equip them as mobs are killing you.

17. Next go in the door that was previously blocked by the barrier and talk to Sema. Kill "Archents" to get keys for the chest. Archents are just the old spider sprites.

You'll need three keys to open the chest and when you get it open, you'll obtain a short bow which is good for +50 damage.

18. Now go back to the entrance and talk to Sema. He will ask you to kill the giant maggots and bring him the Iten it drops.

The giant maggots are difficult to kill even at level 45, so you'll be at this for a while, dying over and over, walking back to the cave, dying, walking back again.

Note: Although there are two giant maggots, you only have to kill one of them to get the reward, which is a Desert Shirt, giving you +6 defense, which is actually an alright reward.

19. Go back to Sema and collect your reward.

You've now officially done everything there is to do in Tulimshar.

Now that all the NPC's have all blown their respective quest nuts, they're no longer interested in talking to you so you'll get ho-hum small talk about "a miner's life for me!" and "oh this work is so dangerous!" etc, etc. Now take your meager low-def armor and low-hit weapon rewards that you just spent four to six hours obtaining and get on with your life.

Total quest rewards:

2000GP total

1 Serf Hat, which you can get for free by turning in monster points
1 bow, which you can buy cheaply
100 arrows, which are 1GP each or free by killing sea slimes
1 boots, which you can get for free by turning in monster points
A leather shield, which you can buy cheaply
1 pair of miner's gloves, which you can buy cheaply five steps from where they're given to you
1 short bow, which is rare and gets you +50 damage
1 Desert Shirt, also rare and a decent quest item
1 Iten which is (as far as I know) useless other than for selling to another newb

Thank you for putting that together, foxmajik. I like your sense of humor!

Would it be okay if the excellent information you posted ended up in the wiki?
Would you like to add it, or would you be content if someone else did?
You earn respect by how you live, not by what you demand.

Interesting. Killing the Giant Cave Maggot isn't supposed to be done alone...it is a boss and may require more than one person on low level to defeat. Have you tried that yet? I'd like some feedback on people that attempted to kill the Giant Cave Maggot that is between levels 25 and 30, with only the quest items obtained. I managed to kill the Giant Cave Maggot with one character using the bow without dying, though I had to sell stuff I got from monster points to keep my arrows up to do it, which is why the items from the rewards master was adjusted so people could acquire more money for their efforts.

On the quest items, I can remove most of those items from sell and from monster points so it won't seem like such a petty reward. However, I do feel you that you'd like a reward that is somehow stronger than what is offered. I'll consider possible rewards that could help a character along within current game balance parameters. Probably some sort of XP reward.
Current character is "Abolish".

I'm not really a team player. I prefer to play by myself, so I'm good at finding workarounds for completing quests that should require multiple people. I used a combination of potions and dodging to slay the maggots. The scythe's attack range is greater than that of the maggot, so you can stand 1 tile outside its attack range and strike it, then back up a tile and strike it again, and so on until you defeat it. In fact, most mobs are this way. If you time it correctly you can defeat any mob without ever taking damage. Exceptions are mobs that have very long attack ranges like the evil skulls in the mines of Hurnscald.
I managed to kill the Giant Cave Maggot with one character using the bow without dying, though I had to sell stuff I got from monster points to keep my arrows up to do it, which is why the items from the rewards master was adjusted so people could acquire more money for their efforts.
It's been my experience that using the bow is a waste of time. You spend half your time grinding for arrows. That's why I was disappointed when the weapon reward was another bow, when there are already two bows in the game. A short sword would have been a nicer reward, in fact that's what I was expecting.
On the quest items, I can remove most of those items from sell and from monster points so it won't seem like such a petty reward.
A bigger GP reward would be nice for people who like to use range weapons as you do. I found it funny that I got two 500GP rewards on separate occasions after having just gotten 1000GP as a reward on a prior quest that was a prerequisite.
However, I do feel you that you'd like a reward that is somehow stronger than what is offered. I'll consider possible rewards that could help a character along within current game balance parameters. Probably some sort of XP reward.
A good modification to the quest would be to put the NPC's in an area where you're not constantly being attacked by agro mobs while you're talking to the NPC's. It's not really fair for lower level characters to be attacked by ten mobs and to not be able to do anything about it while they're clicking through your well planned and long story dialogs.

I'd also reduce the spawn rate. There were several instances where my client (I used the most current TMW client and 4144's client) lagged to the point of not being able to track the mobs, which leaves it in a state where the mobs are invisible and can't be attacked but they can still attack you.

I liked that the number of keys required to complete the quest was not specified. It adds a nice extra level of anticipation and discovery to the quest. If there is some way you can make it random between 1 and 5 keys that might be even more fun.

It would be nice if there was some kind of clue as to which order the quests need to be completed. Maybe you could have the NPCs say something like "I'd like to have your help but it seems like X needs your help more first." I understand the challenge value of figuring out in which order the quests need to be done, but it doesn't make any sense story wise because there's no story element that indicates a reason for the order of the quests.

I wouldn't mind if someone used my post to add the content to the wiki.

There are several quests in the walkthrough/quests page of the wiki that are no longer accessible and several which need to be added.
