An in-game jail should be part of the game and story; not for rule enforcement.

It was Jaxad, also an admin now, who made such a map back then in the first place...

Well, I know about the problems that might occur. However, I think, with a "jail" mapflag which makes chatting, whispering, doing magic, etc. impossible and with an npc you need to hand some money so he lets you in for one minute (with a time out), would make it quite different from the bot check area which is not accessible at all and therefore an attraction everybody wants to see.

And I do agree with the first part of this statement: It would be good to have a prison as a part of tmw. And it would not only be for rule breakers since it would be accessible for a short time. If they see how things are being in prison, I don't think people will actually want to go there for more than an hour. The mapflag proposed by MC would also make it suitable for law enforcement.

I truly give up.

Just one question, you nailed dark water to the wall, what about my other 40 characters?

You punishment is so bad, that I have to spend 4 seconds logging in as another character.

It's just like with every ban. You can always log in with say 36 other characters if you have that many. Only that you can still log in with a different character of that account, of course. They can log in with a different character and have a second and third chance for their account. This might be a reason to put people into jail more quickly than most of us now use the "ban hammer". But it would also be necessary to be able to set a time-off for jail - if that is possible. If the time is over and the respective person logs in again, they should be teleported out of the prison (also for people who log off during the one minute visit).

I think the reason this idea is so popular, even with limited resources, is that we'd all like to point and laugh at a bunch of spammers locked in a room together. It's just a funny idea that makes things a little more lighthearted.

A jail would make a cool dungeon, though. Ragnarok Online has a dungeon which is partly an old, derelict prison full of undead inmates. It's a really creepy and fun scenario.

maybe not a jail that looks like something. Because that would, as DarkWater said, encourage people to go there. I mean I would like to have a picture of Leela in jail and i would not care if i have to spend a day there, i would just open the client to let the time count down, and play another character in that time.

So my idea, to make it uninteresting to be in "jail" would be a map that is no map at all... Something like just a black or grey or whatever area. with really nothing but maybe walls around. no pixelart there. No ability to whisper/talk, no visitors.
The time you would spend there only counts when you are online, everytime you are online it keeps counting down, maybe a little clock in the corner or something like /jailtime , would tell you how much is left.
and after the time is done you are automatically released / warped into the front of a house that could look like a jail from the outside but you can't enter it.

And about the idea for a jail for the story. Good idea. Maybe there could be a cool quest with the jail in it...

Oh hell, you guys convinced me. Let make another system so the scammers and abusers can scam and abuse.

Why not, I mean after all, since there is zero difference between that and a normal ban, and the developers are just awash in free time. Lets go ahead and make a cage so we can throw things at inmates.

Lets do this, instead of working on the 2 handed swords or new sets of armour. And the new development areas can be but on hold so we can get a jail.

That is what we want. Why waste our time doing anything else?

Never underestimate the power and depth of human stupidity.

The bot check area is really VERY uninteresting...still everybody wants to go there. And I bet that even on a totally black screen people will be really keen on going there and making screen shots.

THAT is why I suggested the NPC you can pay to be able to visit the prison for a short time period - like one minute. That's how the thrill can be taken off being imprisoned.

katze: the botcheckarea is interesting. because, and i know how stupid this sounds, there is written in giant letters "bot check". So people want a picture where they stand at the giant letters.

Just found this topic so I apologise for reviving a possibly dying (doomed) idea. I think that if someone has the spare time then they should make it, propose to the devs and if it's not too much trouble apply it. Have a visiting area so people can go see what the fuss is all about and 5000gp charge to visit (might help with deflating economy). If people want to go see the convicts so be it.

As for DarkWater's argument that another account can be logged in to play. How's that different from being banned then? You can visit yourself in jail and point and laugh? As with most development on TMW if someone has the time and it's not too much trouble to the admin+devs there's no harm in testing the idea out.

Another idea is to simply put the character's avatar there and to the actual banned player it just says "You're banned for XX hours." when they try to log in. The only problem I can see is if the jail gets crowded and even then overlapping avatars isn't really that bad a problem.
