Cannot initiate trade despite having the skill

Hi.
I surely misunderstood something, but I do have the trade skill, have pressed 'r' to enable trade and when right clicking other player, I click trade and nothing happens...
To make sure, I've registered another account, logged in 2 computers with my old and new account and they can't trade as well (the new account also has the trade skill and accepts trade requests).
What am I missing here?

'r' only blocks incoming requests. You can always request a trade if you have the skill. Likewise, the skill is only needed to request a trade.

Did you try both directions with your second account?

Yes, I tried both...
I've traded a few times, but only with other players initiating the trade...
Could this be a bug in the Linux client shipped with Ubuntu 10.04?

Just having the trade skill (which is obtained by talking to Trader and paying 5GP) is enough to initiate trade, right?

When I have time, I'll try compiling the client myself to check whether it works...

luis, when you get in game hunt down thedarkfinder. There is a trade bug that will create a, trade is not possible for unknown reason.

I mean with trade not happening. I doubt it's a client issue. It might not report all failure conditions.

As long as I have played with .29.1 there has always been a trade issues where the client will not open a trade, will not load the items, and will not finish the trade. This is trades from one of my characters to one of my characters.

In the first case you click on the character and you receive an error that says, "trade was canceled for unknown reason." In the load trade, you can not click and add items. You can highlight items but they will not add. Regardless of what the item is or how much is in the trade window. You have to open a new trade, try to trade the item, if you can not add the item, you have to close, and reopen until you can. The last problem is when you agree to the trade, it cancels and all the items/money is either lost or returned back to the original user.

I have traded 4kk in gold and items in window, and have lost both the money and the items.

Before you say go off about the agree thing, I was both of the characters at the time. Both the money and the items were lost. The general tab only said, trade canceled. But the money nor items were return.

This is the biggest reason I move to the 4144 patch and have not looked back.

Do try the mana nightlies. Most of the fixes 4144 has were done in mana.

The bug regarding lost items DarkWater described smells rather server-sided to me. Ensuring inventory consistency during trades is the responsibility of the server, not the client.

Did 4144 even change anything in trade handling?

Like with every bug: To fix it we first need to find a way to reproduce it at will. So when someone would find a way of doing a trade which always results in loss of items and/or money and describe it it would help us a lot to pinpoint and fix the issue (no, "trade with a known scammer" doesn't count )

Just to confirm: I did installed the 4144 version, and, yes, trading works on it!!!!!
So... It is a bug on the "official" client...
