Game Comments

Post by Alige »

I went on Ubuntu Software Center and read the comments about The Mana World. Some comments revealed a lot of things that I thought myself too, especially the last one.
Don wrote:The Mana World... Fun game (at first) but limited content, seems to be stuck in a 'development hell' of a sort. Conflicting updates that remove content and add new but nothing exciting. Therefore the overall content of the game has nearly stalled. The game is basically in the same state as it was 3 - 4 years ago when I last played.

GM abuse is pretty bad on this game, so when you play just try to keep your head down out of that stuff. They are known to give rare and unobtainable items out to their friends. Check out their boards if you want to know more about it. Don't expect to play for long, you'll get bored or be a victim of admin abuse. Also botting is allowed. Which I don't agree with, but that is just me.

The Good: The game engine is nice, multi-platform, open source. Has a lot of potential, but only if the leadership was changed with someone who knows a thing or two about project management and fixed the admin abuse situation. Otherwise it will remain in "development hell" and with low player base.

This is just my observation & opinion of The Mana World. I hope these problems will be fixed so that Linux will have a nice open source MMORPG.
To sum up, we need to move on but that can't be done unless we have motivated pixel artists. We have enough people working on scripts, maps, music... but not enough on art!

Moreover, about the GM abuse, I definitively agree with Don (the author of this comment). That doesn't mean we should remove the GM level from people who have it, we should just establish some limits somehow. GMs and DEVs, especially Platyna (but that is in rare cases) should be warned not to abuse the broadcast command whereas the local_broadcast may be fine. Please take note that this comment about the game isn't so old: 2011-06-08.

Hope this helps,
Regards.

Well, the comment isn't based then, he speaks about things which happened some years ago. Just do a nice comment saying that the game got a good community and a new team of developers/gm.

'IMO this should be a red flag. This is obviously someone with an ax to grind. Comparing the state of thegame in 2008 and 2011 shows a VAST difference. Skills, prealpha to alpha, terranite cave, terranite armor, crafting, redone nivalis, yeti quest, gy inn, etc. Hell the GRAVEYARD wasn't even addeduntil 2009.

I agree. It's shocking how no content has been added in years. Other servers now have skills (brawling, speed, mallard, resist poison, astral soul). We need a new cave complex, too, maybe with yetis in it. Where's the damned Graveyard Inn that was promised a year ago? At least get a tutorial, and maybe an NPC that gives hints to beginning players so they don't need to refer to the wiki constantly. Oh, and someone should make a quest for the Black Boots.

Oh darn. I just noticed the thread at http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopi ... =1&t=12669

It's totally true that GMs give rare items too. Sure, they don't have the @item command available, but I know for a fact that some of the GMs have been selling their rares on ManaMarket. We must put a stop to this abuse!1!

Broadcasts happen far too often. If I want to play at Candor, I'll bloody well go there and start my own battle. GM spawn parties should be private; don't tell everyone in the game, they'll just join in the fun. (Did I say Candor? Oh no, another new area in the game!)

Sarcasm aside, the only point that doesn't seem completely stupid and wrong there is about botting. It is allowed to an extent. That's a whole can of worms that's been thoroughly chewed over many times already. Let's not get sidetracked on it here.

Whoever wrote that on the Ubuntu site is either lying through his teeth or has severe paranoia and stopped taking medication.

EDIT: discusion on this post should be done here: http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopi ... 12&t=14859
imo, the starting area of tulim doesn't really show the game off. everything is drab browns and tans, the tile sets out there badly need updated.
i propose a solution that could be accomplished in a number of ways: start the player off as a bad ass.
either have the player start as a high level char, or have them start fighting nerfed versions of high level mobs.
either way, throw them into the Chocolate Cupcake after the start, with a huge battle raging around them in a colorful and varied map. they should inevitably lose the battle and awaken with the current starting gear and level 1 at sorfina's.

if starting them off as a high level char is possible, you should give them the option to choose class and have the server adjust stats+gear+skills accordingly.

to reiterate: the game should sell itself.

Well maybe we (you!) should pimp up the starting area, that part didnt receive much love after the resolution change.
Hell, I guess most of the buildings are still empty and the bank still doesnt work!

New stuff for players who wasted already too much time into the game is only good for bringing them to spend even more time with the game, but not to recruit new zombies.

I thought we had a gm log for this abuse-thingy, maybe that should be made more known.

@Platyna: I know you tend to forget that, but you are just the server and not the game. Maybe TMW needs to pull an "mana" again. I liked Elvens homeserver or Ultramichys unstable server more anyway :)
