The Mana World beginners guide

Post by veryape »

So, I remember how lost I felt at times when joining this game.

I wrote a kind of sloppy guide for newcomers of this game, please feel free to correct possible faults with it, and improve it, hopefully we can make a really nice guide for new players to read. If it becomes really good maybe it could be shipped with the client or something since many people don't think of looking at the wiki all the time etc.

Welcome to TMW!

This is my first shot at a guide for the newcommer so some errors might creep into this.

1. General tips about the client (ManaPlus)

At first the client might seem like super complicated to use, so many key shortcuts, so many options
and what the heck does that yellow bar do?

You can play by using your mouse but I discourage this because it just makes your actions in game
clunky, i've never came across a older player that uses this method for playing. That leads me into
thinking more people than me are of the same opinion. Learn to use the keyboard to control your
charachter instead. However right-clicking other players gives you a handy menu with choices such
as trade etc, this is useful. For playing i would suggest using the keyboard though.

BASIC CONTROL CHEAT SHEET
Arrow keys = move around
ALT + Numbers = emote
S                   = sit/stand
T                   = Toggle ignore incoming trades on/off
X = Target and Attack nearest monster
Z                   = Pick up loot
ENTER = Activate the chat/command line, Press enter again to post.
SHIFT               = Untarget Mob/NPC
N                   = Target NPC
Q = Target Player (Mostly used in PVP, kill the GM events and such)
ALT + arrow keys = Change direction of your character without moving
F2                  = Show character profile
F3                  = Show inventory
F4                  = Show used equipment
F5                  = Show skills
F6                  = Toggle mini map on/off
F8                  = Show shortcut bar
F9 = Open settings for the client
F11 = Open the social tab
Numbers = Use the referring slot in the shortcut bar.
CTRL + Numbers = Change outfit

You can choose what bars/buttons to show in the top of your client by right clicking one of them.
As an archer it is quite handy to see how many arrows you have left for instance.

Enable the Status Bar (aka. Yellow Bar) to be able to see what current settings you have for your
character, this bar can be confusing at the start but once you learned how to use it effectively
it will be your friend. If your character starts behaving weird, like don't attacking mobs, not
keeping the weapon you equipped it with etc right click the Yellow Bar and choose reset and all
should go back to normal. (for more info check: http://manaplus.org/yellowbar)

The shortcut bar is your friend, it is handy to put things you use often on shortcuts there, like
healing items/food. You add things to the shortcut bar by dragging and dropping.

You can also setup different outfits, press F3 and click Outfits, drag and drop equipment to the
different outfits as you see fit. You change outfit with Ctrl + number.

This is just the mere basics, for more information check these sites:
http://manaplus.org/features
http://manaplus.org/documentation
https://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=11221 (Old and probably outdated but holds some
useful info)

2. Rules of the game

First and most importantly: The guys you meet in game are other human beings, don't behave like a
jerk.

Second, play by the rules, the rules of the game as of now (feb 2014) is:

Players breaking the following rules may be banned (up to and including a permanent ban) or have
their characters reset at the GM's discretion:

  1. Do not abuse other players (insults, swearing, and the like directed to a particular person
     or persons)
  2. No bots (including ANY AFK activity or automated following)
  3. No spamming / flooding (including trade spam)
  4. No begging
  5. Speak English on public chat
  6. Treat others the same way you would like to be treated

AFK botting will be determined by talking to players who are moving and/or attacking.
Automated following will be determined by observation.

IMPORTANT up to date rules can always be found at:
https://github.com/themanaworld/tmwa-server-data/blob/stable/world/map/npc/functions/game_rules.txt

3. Getting started

WTFBBQ!! I don't understand the quests, I don't have any idea of what to do!

We do not at this time have a quest-log/quest-tab to keep track of the quests. The way to play this
game is to do as people did when playing rpgs before the age of computers, scribble down notes on
pieces of paper or in your favorite text editor. (At the end of this document I will make a quest
cheet sheet that you can use to keep track of what you have done, or maybe make it another file
altogether)

Before this concerns you I would like to talk about the basic character builds in the game.
As you start out you can chose between two basic builds, ranger(archer) and warrior. I prefer
to play the ranger build at lower levels because at low level the archers only need to care
about one stat, and that is dexterity(DEX). Dexterity governs both how good your aim is and how
much damage you do with each successful hit with ranged weapons. The only downside to being a
ranger in the beginning is that you have to buy ammo and that can be quite a strain on the economy
in the absolute beginning of the game.

Warriors on the other hand must be able to take a blow or two without dying while having to have
both vitality (VIT) and DEX to be able to hit the mobs.

At higher levels you can choose to specialize your role with differing stats and focus skills.
There are multiple ideas about builds in the game, if you check around on the forums you will
probably find a lot of suggested stats etc.

For ideas about stats you can always check this:
http://phoenixcouncil.com.ar/forumdisplay.php?fid=18

Some of the stats give bonuses every 10 or 5 points.
STR, gives a bonus every 10 points
AGI, no extra bonus
VIT, gives a bonus every 5 points
INT, gives mana-regen bonus every 6 points, give m. attack bonus every 10 points.
DEX, gives bonus every 5 points
LUK, gives bonus every 5 points (I think, but I am unsure)

For a more detailed explanation about stat points check the wiki:
https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Stats#Leveled_Stats

4. General gameplay tips

So now you have chosen how to fight monsters, sweet action! Make the quests in beginners quests in
Tulishmar (the town you are in). A general rule of thumb is to not sell things off to the general
store. Most of the loot you find you will have use for in quests or as healing items. You can
however sell of surplus weapons, such as daggers and other stuff that monsters drop from time to
time. When you have reached level 15 I would suggest traveling to Hurnscald.

Before going to Hurnscald there are a few things that you really should do in Tulishmar.

* Learn trading skill from the trader at the main square in Tulishmar.
* Learn emoting from the entertainer at the main square in Tulishmar.
* Learn party skill from Tathin in the building straight north of the main square.
* Sign up for monster points with Aidan at the main square.

Hurnscald is where most of the people are, especially the more seasoned players. Feel free to ask
them questions and for help with quests/other things you do not understand. However, and this is a
big one, NEVER EVER BEG! if you do you will have a hard time getting any help whatsoever. People
gets annoyed when people beg for stuff, we older/richer players had to earn our stuff in the same
hard way you have to. You will have a lot bigger chance of getting free stuff by being nice and
polite.

4.1 How to get to Hurnscald (or anywhere else)
Travel between continents and towns are done by taking the ferry, it costs 250gp at low level
and raises to 500gp at level 20. In Tulishmar the you can find the ferry at the docks, north
of the city walls, between the tutorial area and the city, enter the wooden dock right next
to the Ferry Master and you will get a dialogue asking you where you want to go.

What about Candor? Why is it 1500gp?!
Candor is the most exotic location you can take a ferry to in the game, it houses the Candor
arena that is basically a mini-game. You will occasionally see global announcements about
Candor fights. Feel free to join in once you see one of those announcements, but expect death.
Death is fun and well worth 1500gp if you can spare it for a short rush of fast paced fun!

Social side of the game
Try joining a party with players that are roughly at your level and fight with them, if all party
members are within 10 levels of each other you can share experience in the party by typing "/exp yes"
in the party tab and turn it off with "/exp no".

It might be a good idea to join a guild, there are a few different guilds with different goals,
some is for people who speaks a particular language, others are for role playing purposes or
just to bring people together, check out the wiki page about guilds for more info:
https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Player_Groups

Having money issues?
Make sure that you do the daily quests each day, they are an easy way to gain some money
check out: https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Daily_Quests

Shop arrows at the cheapest possible price, outside the hatmakers cave/snake pit the arrows sell for
1gp each, this is half the regular price you pay at other shops. Go there and stock up every now
and then and you have halved your ammo cost. The snake pit is located south east of Tulishmar.

Also once you have reached a bit higher level you can start to kill the mobs that drop things that
you can sell for quite much money, Red Slimes are the usual target for the guys hunting for drops
to sell.

5. QUESTS

5.1 Quests for LEVELING up quickly

To level up as quickly as possible there is a few quests that gives you a lot of XP, do those as
  fast as possible.

*The Orum quest, read the instructions carefully at:
    https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Orum_Quest

*Agostine the tailor and subsequently Lora Tay the legendary Seamstress, gives 50000 xp
    https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Lora_Tay_The_Legendary_Seamstress

*The Bone quest, gives 50000 xp and 5000gp

*Orum and Waric follow-up quest, gives 250000xp and 100000gp (suggested level 40-60)

*The letter quest, 2000 xp and 1000gp the first time

*LVL 30 - Make green dye, gives you 20000 xp

*LVL 35 - Focusing Skill quest and brawling skill, gives you the focusing skill ability and 10000xp
    https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Focusing_Skills
    https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Brawling_Skill
(hint, do not put any skill points on the brawling skill since it is fairly useless, save your
points and distribute them on more useful skills once you have learned them.)

*LVL 40 - Bone knife quest, gives 50000 xp and the bone knife (+115 damage)

5.2 Quests that give you USEFUL ITEMS

There are a few quests that give you the items you need to progress as effective as possible.

For an archer/ranger those quests that gives you the essential gear are:

*The bandit quest (the forest armor is arguably the best chest armor for archers, +30 DEX)
*The cat ears quest (the +3 AGI is useful since it helps you fire your arrows faster)
*The forest bow quest (gives you the forest bow, the best bow you can get your hands on before
    level 90)

For the warrior the following quests gives you good stuff early on:

*Farmer's Scythe, gives you the scythe (+75 damage)
*The Orum quest (Gives out the candle helmet that has really good defense for this level)
*Short sword quest (Gives you the short sword, that can be transformed into the best sword in the
game later on) HINT: ask for help in town with this quest!
*The Wooden shield quest (gives you the wooden shield, note that the forest bow is a prerequisite)
*Bone knife quest, gives you the bone knife (+115 damage)

6. Training areas for effective leveling

LVL 1-10: Hit maggots and scorpions around town in Tulishmar, Stay close to Elanore in Tulishmar
she will heal you for free until you reach LVL 11.
LVL 11-15: Walk south into the desert and work the scorpions, fire goblins and maggots, watch out
            for the black scorpion.
LVL 15-30: Go to Hurnscald, begin to work on the quests with useful items listed above, don't
forget to touch the soul menhir in town so you spawn there when/if you die.
LVL 30-40: Continue doing the useful items quest, hunt woodland creatures and slimes.
Start doing the magic quests, learn focusing skills.
LVL 40-60: Start hunting in the mines north of Hurnscald, Black Scorpions, Spiders for XP,
            Red slimes for money.
LVL 60+: Start going to the troll cave (It is located in the far south west corner of the
Tulishmar area, if you have trouble finding it ask for help. You can also join in on
the GY raids and snake pit clearings if you are part of a bigger fighting party.
Learn the speed skill. Be prepared to grind for levels at this stage, it won't be as
fast a progress from now on. Hopefully you have learned to know a few people, try to
form xp-sharing parties since they make the grinding a bit less tedious imo.
Input from newcomers would be greatly appreciated since I might oversee things that they do not know. I have played this game for so much some stuff just seems so natural to me i forgot to put it in there even if it is not obvious at all for the new player.

Feel free to either put what is lacking in the thread or to edit the guide and just put it up again.

Actually, both str and dex are "bonus every 5 points", but the *big* bonuses are every 10 points, and go up every 10 points. That's why it is really worth going from 99 to 100, because at 99 the major bonus is 9*9, and at 100 the major bonus is 10*10.

I have no clue how magic works.

About Status Points:
Note: All divisions ( / ) in RMW are integer divisions (quotient).
  • At each Base Level you gain a number of Status Points. These points can be used to improve your 6 main Stats. The number of points gained at each Base Level can be calculated as [(BaseLevel+14)/4]=[(BaseLevel+2)/4] + 3.
  • The cost of improving a Stat increases as the Stat rises (the base amount only). The cost to increase a Stat by one can be calculated as [(BaseOfStat - 1)/ 10] + 2. For instance, if you have 29+3 Dex, then it will cost [(29-1)/10]+2 = 2+2 = 4 Status Points to improve it to 30+3.
brings you the information you miss.
This is a nice walkthrough which could find a place in wiki.

addendum: for bonus details Wiki is a must, they are too complex to be put in this short tutorial.
https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php ... eled_Stats
Also, all experienced users know that the initial built is almost always a bad one, except perhaps, when the character will be a warrior, which may not be the preference of the beginning player. I suggest to join to this file, let's say 3 builds, and directions to go further, as you did, Frosts posts are indeed very useful to understand status and avoid common traps in which I fell of course.

For my side, (Frost's posts were not yet released) I found The Holy Mana Clan walkthrough (Hello Sugar and Ichigo :) ). It is not up to date of course, but still very useful; However with it's help, I could reach the maximum level with a single status reset.. I took an exerpt of it, combined it with Frosts articles and posted the whole on CRC forum at http://crc.themanaworld.org/forum_threads/767151. (Both forums are public)

What a newbie might find confusing on the Quests wiki page is not knowing right off the bat just where the quests are located. https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Quests

For instance, the low level (1-20) quests that a newbie can complete in Tulimshar are listed further down on the page than quests in Hurnscald and Nivalis. It might make more sense to bump up all the seven Tulimshar low level quests (Newbie Graduation, Tulimshar Quests, Ayasha’s Hide-and-Seek, Imec’s Petition, Anwar’s Field, Kylian the Businessman, and Banu) to the top of the list.

One quest newbies tend to miss at low levels is the fluffy hunting quest, which gets more difficult as your level increases (imo). It's not mentioned in the quests page in the wiki, rather in the skills page and the recommended level is misleading. Mentioning that quest might also be useful.

That's a good point. I've edited the page to incorporate this. Someone might incorporate a better idea in the future for this, but for now, this column is in order. I've only edited the low level though. I see your point here.

Since I loved this feedback: https://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php ... ssy/Quests
This means I'm currently working on a better overview.

The first table stays about the same, just a different design.
I decided to chose a smaller font because it makes the table smaller as well - especially the other tables would be far to large else.
I think we should keep the complete overview at the top of the page so you won't have to scroll down and search under which category the quest you're looking for is listed.

Below I added tables for each level range including details like Starting Location, Level, Rewards or Costs.
IMO that's far better than clicking through all of the quests to check those details.

Of course there's still a lot to do.
Not only in design and data, also making the tables sortable so you can e.g. sort by starting area, also adding things like the magic quests or Dark Green Dye (which is an awesome quest to make fast EXP at early levels), etc. etc.
So at this point it's just an information that I'm working on it and to give a first impression :D

Oh and Speiros helped me filling out the cells which was quite some work, so thanks again :alt-3:

No, I didn't forget about it.
It's just that I had some other things to do and this overview is damn much work as I have to check every single quest page and eventually rewrite it :?
E.g. I completely rewrote/rearranged the Magic Quests page.

Anyway, today I rearranged the Raging Skill page (the skill pages are actually also quests that need to be included in that new overview).
The first part about hunting Fluffies doesn't require a level but of course starting it with level 1 doesn't really make sense ( = putting this subquest at level 1 in the overview).
