The attribute and skill system on the new server (see the new server FAQ for details) will work without distinctive classes. But the attribute system will encourage you to specialize your character into a specific direction. The main directions will feel a lot like classes but give you a lot more freedom and room for experimentation in the character development than predefined classes.
When you choose the "warrior" class in a class-based RPG and distribute your character points like a mage you will get a character that can neither fight (because it has the wrong attributes for fighting) nor cast magic (because it lacks the mage-class abilities). The character will be unplayable.
But when you have a classless system, try to play as a warrior but distribute your points like a mage you will end up with a character that can't fight but will still make a decent magic user. Maybe not what you wanted but still a playable character you can have fun with.
In a class-based system you MUST know beforehand how to distribute your attributes for the class you've chosen or you WILL make errors and create an unplayable character (some modern RPGs like World of Warcraft solve this problem by not allowing the player to influence the characters attributes in the first place, but we don't want to go that way). In a classless system you can distribute your attributes however you feel and see with what kind of character you end up with.
