Death Messages

Post by Crush » 27 Feb 2008, 17:00

While implementing player respawn for the new server I got the idea that it would be funny to show another random sarcastic phrase whenever the player character dies. When you have any suggestions for death messages (may be serious, funny or a reference to another RPG game) just post them. Note: for technical reasons all messages are automatically appended with " Press OK to respawn." and may not contain any dynamic content (like character name etc...).

The messages I already implemented can be found on SVN http://themanaworld.svn.sourceforge.net ... iew=markup line 610-619 (I don't want to spoil them for anyone who wants to find them while playing).

Please do not send me any inquiries regarding player accounts on TMW.

I think they should be moved to the server. This makes it easier for each server to have different ones and allows the server to add some context. Of course having them on the server means the translations are done there and everyone sees the same language(s), but thats how monsters/items/etc are done anyways.

Nope, monster and item names are client-sided. And please stay on-topic.

"Looks like you got your head handed to you." (Earthbound reference)
"Annihilated." (Final Fantasy 6 reference)

That inspires me a bit: how about a random array of cultural references to video games?
This message used to be meaningful.

I was simply following suit with what Crush has already done. You should look at the messages he's already input, within supplied file. He already thought up two of the best references. 8)

We could use every phrase from the Monty Python sketch about the dead parrot:
'[name] is stone dead'
'[name] is deceaced'
'[name] passed on'
'[name] is no more'
'[name] has ceased to be'
'[name] expired and went to his maker'
'[name] is a late [race]'
'[name] rests in peace'
'[name] is pushing up the daisies'
'[name] ran down the curtain'
'[name] joined the choire invisible'
'[name] is an ex-[race]'

I like the idea. Reminds me of the old sierra adventure games.

"Now the maggots can have their revenge"

or

"Never thought you'd be maggots dinner huh?"
"I'm a Mog, half man, half dog... I'm my own best friend!" - Barf
