Another idea I started:
The problem with that mask is that it only works with a bald head, otherwise it looks stupid. Criticism and feedback needed!
(And yes, I "stole" the skull image from the helloween event monster and just made it a little bit bigger

)

A lot of hats have that problem.

Yes I know, but with this hat it's extremely

. I hope there will be a solution someday.

I think we should able to resolve this problem in future using additional "MASK" file. I recommend 8-bit (grayscale) image to describe what should be visible for each item. It should be additional parameter in item XML file. Missing parameter equals no mask file needed.

I'm working on it, but I'm not quite sure about the style yet. That's why I made an alternate version.
So please tell me which one you prefer:
The older version:
The alternate version:

(this one is just partly finished yet, just tell me which style you prefer)

I prefer the older one. It has 3rd dimensional and looks more real then plain new one. In other words
APROVED :)

The alternate version indeed lacks depth. I prefer the old one. just curious, are you also going to animate the hat while he is walking / attacking etc? I think that would be really awesome.

An animation while the player is walking would be cool I guess. I also had the idea of glowing eyes while the player attacks. The only problem is that I never made animations before

. But it would be the next step for me to learn it. I try

I made the other directions (except the death sprite, it's still under construction):
EDIT:

Looking good, but it seems to jump every few frames.

Yes, but I really dont understand why. I also copied every single 64 x 64 frame of the "player_male_base.png" in 64 x 64 layers to create an animated.gif and it looks like this:

I'm quite sure that I made no mistake while putting all together but it looks like the head is jumping. If I look at the single frames it all looks right. It's still a secret to me..
Anyway, I tested the animation of the mask in game and it looked good, without jumping frames.
Here's another one:

So, finaly after hours and hours of work, I finished it. I also added the .xml file, so you can test it in game.
