I have an idea, let's stick high frequency words from Portuguese and Spanish into a word filter that automatically bans you for a day for speaking (or attempting to in this case) a language other than English. This will greatly decrease the problems we experience with the flood of Portuguese and Spanish speaking on the public chat, as well as take some stress off of the GMs.

A word filter is a good idea, but somehow, an all-or-nothing system seems to be begging for some errors.

I don't know how hard this could be to implement, but perhaps instead a "three-strikes" system could be put in place. If a player speaks in a non-English language, they could be given an automatic response in their own language saying "Please speak in English in Public Chat. Use /whisper when speaking [language]" That way, there is no question about whether or not they have been told the rules. On the fourth offense, they are banned for a few hours.

Another idea is to only implement the filter for particularly long messages (such as trading requests, etc). That way, people who innocently say "hola" to a friend of theirs aren't hit with the ban hammer.

a filter is good but not like kron05931 said. imagine there is a portuguese player that is telling me: hi "celso, everything is cool whit you?" but in portuguese, and i answer to him in portuguese too:"speak only in english." then, after that i will be banned? i dont want that...
i agree with ishara and for me its how it should be implemented but imagine that i go with 1 friend to a quiet place to chat whithout whispering... banned? i think it should be added a system to check how manny people are around or creating some sort of private chat bar...

but how would such a skript be able to find out whether you're in a public place or not - especially when "public places" aren't that static, but rather emerging and vanishing depending on the people present there?

or is the rule, never speaking another language except for whispering?

hum...i think its impossible... maybe adding a chat system by tabs, like firefox, that we could add people to chat in privacy. i will post a image with an example

How about that auto-ban at places which usually have more people (like towns, mines, bat-cave, dimonds cove (sorry if bad spelling...)), and that we can talk other language on all other places. If somebody is annoying you on some "deserted" place, you can ask them to speak English? Is it that hard?

And I beleve GMs can watch at towns for that too... Maybe they could get massage from bot (server) when somebody is speaking nonenglish language...

You have 2 ways to do this: 1. make dictionary of all english words (you could easy forgot some :() or 2. put all nonenglish words in dictionary (would take a LOT of time). So there is problem with that auto-ban. It can detect badly English as another language (like helo, frend, usualy etc.) and even for short forms (m8, k, brb, lol). You miss letter and you get warned.

We're not all english, so we don't speak it perfectly... Here i have underlined (wrong) words, but not in game.

The 0.1 client already has this. Adding it to the current (0.0) client would be difficult.

The main problem is that GMs tell people to speak English IN ENGLISH. I don't think someone telling me to speak another language in a language I don't understand will work too well.

Yes, I think we deserve to get some massage once in a while. :lol: Sorry, couldn't resist saying that.

I don't want to get a message every time someone says something that is not an English word, because then people could use that to spam me. However, I would like to be able to send a popup with the rules dialogue to players, in their language if available. But the devs are already working on facilitating GM work, I believe. Thank you to them. :mrgreen:

I have heard people speaking in german , polish , French and italian.
Portuguese is spoken a lot , but i havent heard Spanish in a long time.
Could you propose a filter for non-english languages or do you have anything against spanish and portuguese people??

rule #5 is a nazi rule , there is a huge difference between an oficial language and a unique language , there isnt a single democracy in the world that jails people for speaking a language that differs from the official language

I recall a lot of bilingual folks who would talk English at other times.

If the problem actually is people who can't understand rule 5, maybe auto-translations of rule 5 should be added. Say typing "@rule5 de" would make your character say the the rule text in both German and English. Or maybe the character says the short text and the server says the long text (which will let other folks learn how to do it).

Using a Linux distro's IRC bot as an example:

As more quests go in to TMW, we may obtain that feature too (and also more non-English forks).

I personally love the idea of banning.

I think its good to have some universal language, like english in this case. It is like universal basic in star wars.

The bot is a good idea. Can someone stick some python bindings into the client so that I can work on a .py script for that?

I think that would be better server-side. Server-side will be much easier to correct/update; and client-side python bindings could make semi-intelligent farming bots much easier to code.

What if we created a place for them? You could have public place, maybe even a town, for those who didn't speak English? You could have an NPC letting people know that other languages could be used here. That way, people of different nationalities could hang around and talk like a lot of people do at Hurnscald. People have told me that it's about community, not just about leveling up. We are denying anyone who doesn't speak English from that part of the game.

Although, it's not our fault that they don't speak English...
