[WIP] Guard

Post by EJlol » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:30 am

Based on http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5985 I tried to finish Haay's work.

The most left one is from Haay. The others are mine. The most right is the latest one, the other are the "steps" how I made it :P

Beautiful palette usage.

I think we should / could add to our guidelines to include the palette like that on WIP files.

Some people have already been using it and it's rather useful for interoperability. Also teaches newer artists about palette usage.

The reflection on the original is really nice.

Also the subtle hints at the complex shape of the armor are IMO better than the flat plates.

Still, displaying your used palette is nice.

I quite like the subtle detailing on the one second from the left

I like the original helmet the best.

I tried to improve the shading of helmet to make it look a bit more metallike:

Looking at the guard it appears that he is standing at ease. What if when a player approaches the guard he stands at attention until you move away. A guard at attention would give the spear a more vertical appearance, his shield would be in front of the body and in a vertical position and both feet pointed forward.

First I will finish this stance, after that we can always add extra frames with different stances / weapons / etc.

The last graphic looks really cool, but I would like to see more reflection like in Haays first graphic. That would look really awesome.

BTW the first helmet looks more like a banana peel to me. The new one is much better.

I like first and last and some of the middle ones. Could they all be used for different guards?

~with the palette removed, of course...

I tried to make the reflection look a bit wilder (still not done everywhere yet).

Yes, this latest edit is certainly getting more of a battered yet shiny metal feel to it...
