Don wrote:The Mana World... Fun game (at first) but limited content, seems to be stuck in a 'development hell' of a sort. Conflicting updates that remove content and add new but nothing exciting. Therefore the overall content of the game has nearly stalled. The game is basically in the same state as it was 3 - 4 years ago when I last played.

GM abuse is pretty bad on this game, so when you play just try to keep your head down out of that stuff. They are known to give rare and unobtainable items out to their friends. Check out their boards if you want to know more about it. Don't expect to play for long, you'll get bored or be a victim of admin abuse. Also botting is allowed. Which I don't agree with, but that is just me.

The Good: The game engine is nice, multi-platform, open source. Has a lot of potential, but only if the leadership was changed with someone who knows a thing or two about project management and fixed the admin abuse situation. Otherwise it will remain in "development hell" and with low player base.

This is just my observation & opinion of The Mana World. I hope these problems will be fixed so that Linux will have a nice open source MMORPG.
To sum up, we need to move on but that can't be done unless we have motivated pixel artists. We have enough people working on scripts, maps, music... but not enough on art!

Moreover, about the GM abuse, I definitively agree with Don (the author of this comment). That doesn't mean we should remove the GM level from people who have it, we should just establish some limits somehow. GMs and DEVs, especially Platyna (but that is in rare cases) should be warned not to abuse the broadcast command whereas the local_broadcast may be fine. Please take note that this comment about the game isn't so old: 2011-06-08.

Hope this helps,
Regards.
Did you even read the post? Everything there is a lie.
And why is people always speaking of abuse? What's wrong with a couple of @broadcast? And GMs can't even spawn items!
That post was pure trolling.

Oh, and you don't warn Platyna! Platyna warns you!

Then go and "pull" it.

Warning this post rambles a bit!
the ubuntu comments are very unfair and simply not true at this point.

We have had some huge Gm problems in the past and made lots of enemies.
We have made huge progress in many ways... there were very few maps when I started and very little to do in-game.
We have had several development team changes with differing agendas.
We do have a weak infrastructure to support new pixel artists.
Game balance is almost a stasis...level increases but it grows to no point.

I actually think art is our STRONG point, we have nice maps. what we are able to do on these maps is improved but still very limited.

We decided to Not make game critical items non-tradable, this makes some types of game dynamics impossible to implement, like unidentified armors, that improve upon being identified according to level and so on,
using the same icon with different stats and defense etc....[maybe there is some way to do something like this?]
proven concepts that give a feeling of progress. instead we go restat from early archer to warrior and then finally mage...or pick your style here.

A really big improvement has been iventory npc items like scissors and hitchhiker towels, this is fun stuff.
I hope we can expand this emerging category of useful items.

The economy has recovered from the old money bugs and why we worry over this non-issue anymore is beyond me.
We live in a real world with a crappy economy, be nice to have a good one here where we come to escape.
I like the over priced NPC 20+million items, it was a good move now, we need a drop rate that make that makes it possible for a new player to get these items someday, not use them exclusively as a reward for old bug money.

Trying hard to provoke new thought here. In some aspects, we are in a creative rut, but it is not just on the art end.
enjoy the game =] fun is the rule!

GMs are chosen by the community. And I never heard about any serious issues with them.

We created a nice OSS game from scratch and our community evolved from 5 players to 100. We never sold our souls to Satan by selling items or skills for IRL money. No person who ever contributed to this game got a penny.

Therefore less bitching and trolling more pixeling and coding.

Does anyone know how one could submit a different review to that Ubuntu site?

Frost: first you need ubuntu installed :P

Second step, you gotta install the package "The Mana World" as provided by ubuntu repositories there.
(mainly manaclient copied to /usr/bin/ or such)
Then you can write reviews easily within ubuntu softwarecenter.
