Is this truly what we want people to see when they first enter the game
We should work hard to make the starting area captivating as possible (first impressions are everything)
If we could get the higher-level players to gather somewhere else (a different map), it would definitely help. I think a big reason they gather their is because thats where Platyna appears.
NPCs which explain various aspects of the game would be good. Maybe find a way to keep monsters out of the immediate area (the bazaar). Making it less empty would also help. More "shops" and decorations.

I don't understand how that would help. Higher-level players help the new players by answering questions about the game and showing them where to go, among other things.
What do you mean? Are the higher-level players so scary that most people don't want to play anymore? For me, one of the things that made me stay was that higher-level players were very nice to me and helped me.
Vink, I find it a bit boring in some mmorpgs where high-level players fool around (show off) around the newbie quarters. But I also love getting/giving help as well. I remember trying to play a certain mmorpg in which you were killed as soon as you logged in (but most other games I have played has had some kind of protection against such joys).
I personally does not care which town or towns are used for new characters. Though, I would like to see that the towns differ from each other in regard to what they have to offer. Not every town has to have a barber, smithy and the likes, and bigger towns could have several of them.
I redid much of the map to make it more like a town. This includes QOAL's fluency fixes. The X in the bazaar is the approximate location of where new players start.

But, please, add some benches. The people are getting sand down their pants, and believe you me, that sand is hot!
